I took a closer look at your starter pic. Is that a bearing at the very end of the Armature shaft?

no its a metal collar with a split pin in it to hold the armature on.
as a side question... are the armatures normally made out of plastic?

On the split retainer, is it possible to replace that with the other kind of retainer? but im guessing its there due to more pressure.

and on the alternator coil are there lots of different diameters on briggs motor or are they all the same... i found one on a used parts site for like $13!!! but its a full circle instead of half like mine.

going to do more work on the motor tomorrow so ill have some pics hopefully as long as it dosent rain.

Here are the pics from today The first is a pic of the beat up exhaust port

And here is one of the motor assembled minus the carb, exhaust, and the valve spring cover, which we need to replace. think its possible to easily fab on up?

And the head with its new and still shiny head bolts.

*we had a productive day*
-we modded the exhaust from the 5hp to fit.
-we rigged an intake from a plastic air breather part, some of the original intake and electrical tape(gasket for joint)
-we fabricated a valve spring cover and gasket
-we had a successful starter test
-and the motor "started" (it fired 5 or 6 times in a row)
Heres the video of the ignition, you actually cant see it but you can hear it!!

Here is the intake rig, the plastic is attached to to the carb, and the metal bit is on the block

And the working starter

This is the valve spring cover we made and the gasket was cardboard(the wrong kind)

Got a little more work to do but were close

After some troubleshooting today i think we are loosing compression from the cylinder.
i can hear it release through the breather holes in the valve spring area as i hand it over.
i found a parts list for it gonna see what rings will cost.
any suggestions would be welcome. thanks for all the help already.

You need an actual breather, not a piece of plate covering the valve springs like you have set up. There is crankcase pressure created during the engine's normal operation, the breather is there to release it (or you WILL have a fountain of oil from somewhere, ask me how I know).

Well there were enough places on that valve cover plate for it to "breathe", believe me.
That was a temporary stop-gap measure so we could try and turn the engine over. i was planning on either making that one better, ie adding a breather and better gasket, or buying one for it. But thats an easy fix, the leaking piston/cylinder problem definitely needs to be taken care of first.

well on the starter test we ended up MELTING the wire we were using....
and idea of what gauge to use to prevent that. we tested using a 18 or 20ga wire which i knew was too small but it was just a test. i was thinking maybe like 10ga would be better. suggestions?

I found out that the kart is a manco phoenix baja 200.
I primed and painted the Flywheel cover black.
Gotta get some more wire for the welder before we can do the roll bars.
Ordered the rings for the motor. they should be here next week.
gotta find a better solution for the carb.
Ill talk to myself more when something gets done.

So we got alot done today. we welded the new roll bar to the frame. we still have the front and supports to do but it was step 1. sorry this is the best pic ive got.

We also rewelded the floor pan that was loose on one end. some pics of the welds.

Here is a pic of the scoring on the piston from the 8hp

Here is a pic of the new motor we got. it needs a new bearing on the crank case and we need to fix the crank shaft.

We will be ordering the part for the new 6.5hp briggs motor soon. its model is 120312 0143 e1.
