I'd suggest you start by asking the seller what brand/weight of oil is in your engine now. Some of the specialty kart racing oils brands have additives that dont mix well with other brands. Even after you drain the old oil, some of the residue will remain and this can sometimes cause problems when switching to other brands.

If he'd just previously used oil made for cars, (synthetic or petroleum based) there probably wouldnt be any problem switching to most any other brand of automotive oil. But if he used one of the special kart racing brands, you'd want to either stay with that same brand, or flush your engine out with mineral spirits before changing to another brand.

Guys that race engines like yours (w/15-degree motormounts) typically used 14 ounces of oil. You'll just need to use a measuring cup to get the right amount. (You could use 16-ounces if you want, but it'll probably puke those extra 2 ounces out your breather at high rpm)

I use/recommend strait 30 weight Red-E brand, synthetic racing oil in my racekart engine. I buy it from a local automotive speed shop, but you could find it online too.

Are you running gasoline or Methanol in your engine?

After getting a couple tips on that other forum, I contacted the owner of Olson Karts (Greg Olson). He confirmed your kart is an Olson Arrow model made in early 90, he said "they worked very well on dirt or asphalt".

Ok so the previous owner email'd me back and said he ran 10w-30 regular oil in it so my question is should i keep runing regular oil change to synthetic or go to race kart oil

I also ask him if he knew anything eles about the kart and all he told me was that the guy that he bought it from told him it was a coyote frame that he did not know anythig eles. thanx for all your help andrekart

If anything I would RUN SYNTHETIC. Its up to you if you want to run racing not sure if it makes a huge difference.

Well then you could just change the oil to any quality brand of automotive oil you like. You probably dont need to mess with any special kart racing oil unless your going to run methanol and/or scream the engine wide open all the time.

I was thinking you should run 16 ounces just to be safe.

What would be a good race oil because when i do drive it i tend to drive it a lil harder then i should also how do you guys measure the oil on the engine do i have to just level the kart out because of the pitch the engine is at sorry for all the question just new to this hole karting thing

Yeah, good Idea. You could level the kart to check your oil level between oil changes.

I just made a dip stick (out of a small steel rod) for checking the oil with the kart sitting on flat ground. After I used a measuring cup to pour in the correct amount during an oil change, (and before starting) I inserted my dip stick, got a reading, then used a hack saw to cut a small mark on the dipstick signifying a full reading. I just Insert the dipstick at the same angle every time so I know I'm getting an accurate reading. I just keep my dip stick in my tool box.

There's lots of good brands, but I've always had good luck with Redline brand, 30wt synthetic racing oil.

That's the only brand I've ever used in my racekarts. You wouldnt need to flush your engine out with mineral spirits to use this brand.
