New guys Needs advice .....

Hello, a little about myself...... my name is Jordon, 26 yrs old. I live in alberta Canada, I am a automotive mechanic.

Last year I purchased 2 Azuza Fun karts with the larger 14" tall tires and added length to the frames to fit adults . I am running a stock 6.5hp Honda clone and #35 chain, 12 tooth clutch and 72 sprocket. The karts work great other than the chain coming off every so often. the karts do about 40 kph.

So my question is ,, how do I make it faster ? I really don't have money to start modifying the Honda clone with a better rod and flywheel and carbs and all that stuff, Id rather keep the motors fairly stock and reliable, and maybe adjust the governor/take out the throttle stop for a few more rpms, in the 4500 range im guessing. I want to get a #40/41 chain tav2 torque converter and a 60 tooth sprocket. Ultimately I want to get the karts to go around 70+ kph while still having alright power off the line.

Im looking for anybody's suggestions on the best way to do this. thanks

Jordan. From my limited experience messing with karts, if you gear it right with a TAV2, and a 6.5-7 hp engine, you will get decent take off and top speed of 34-36 mph (not sure in kph, what is that mphx2.2?). If you are interested in getting that speed, I can email you a spreadsheet that factors into account the 6" driven and the 7 1/2" driven for the 30 series, and the 40 series torque converters.

as a rule of thumb (my rule of thumb which may be disputed), you will get a good balance of torque and speed with a top speed of 28-36 mph for a 30 series TAV2 and a 6.5-7hp stock engine.

You will get loads more torque with a 40 series, and a top speed of 38-42 mph.

You can gear it so the top speed is slower for either one and get more than enough torque, but even a kart i used to own went 36 mph and would take me up any decent size hill with a 6.5 hp engine on it ( i weigh 210).

For the record, to convert MPH to Km/h, divide MPH by 5, the multiply the result by 8 or, if you can remember them:

1 mile = 1.609344Km
1Km = 0.62137miles

So, 35mph = 56Km/H

AFAIK, there is no 40 series tav2, only 30 series.

40 series components are suited to 1" shaft engines which are more powerful...

A 30 series is the most 'common' go kart torque converter that can handle up to about 8 hp, usually comes in a 3/4 shaft. The driven can be a 6 1/2 or a 7 something. The 6 1/2 is for speed, (i recommend getting the 30 series with 6 1/2" driven, and #40/41 jackshaft sprocket)

A 40 series is the bigger, heavy duty torque converter that will do from 8hp to 18hp or so. I have both torque converters, on my toys and they are really fun. (40 series with a Honda gx390 is always fun!)
