New Go-Cart Idea

Ok.. This is going to be out there.. but... do you guys think it is a good idea to make a treaded compleately homemade gocart? (treaded as in tank treads). It will be wire driven(Computer controlled) with basic gocart features. please comment.

I think the word your looking for is tracked. Check out youtube for "home made tracked vehicle" its been done before with hydrostatic transmissions.

After seeing so many bizarre malfunctions in automotive computer systems, your drive by wire idea kinda scares me. (I'm always thinking of the worst possible scenario but... I'm pitching some minor glitch causing simultaneous loss of steering, wide open throttle and not being able to shut the eingine down)

you can always make something like one of the german kettenkrads from world war two. two tracks in back and a moter cycle wheel in the front.

Anything can be done given enough time and money. I think the primary obstacle would be the limited speeds you can achieve with parts the average guy can find and cobble together. It's an interesting idea, I'm just not sure how practical it might be.

terry makes a good point though you are going to go slow as all get out but it would be really really cool. If you are going to do it though make sure you put some really good suspension on it so that you can go over everywhere.

Idea time!

With a moter driving each side, 3 sensors for steering brake, and throttle, feeding it into the finely tuned micro prosseser to go to two servos pulling throttle cables into 2 small engines, with sensor readings on RPM to conferm the micro prossesers commands,( this will go down hill fast) and noting i am a teriffic robot coder, This could not go wrong! (Not! But worth a shot!)

Im telling you, twin hydrostatic trannys like zero turn mowers use, a bit pricey but easy to set up and you only need one motor.

use a diff. with 2 sets of brakes (1 on each side) and use the brakes seperitly for turning

one bigger lawn mower motor, two lawn tractor trannies, a long a(( belt, and some bobcat tracks. attach a band brake front and rear (to cause the diff's to work) on each side levered off of arm steering a for each side. get the basics then build on em!

If i had the money i would probabily do something like this with my broken zero turn. sounds pretty cool, and 7-12 mph isnt too slow for a homemade tracked vehicle...
