Need help/ideas on an Electric go kart

I finished up the steering this weekend, and my go kart is really taking shape.
I am now starting to turn towards a motor.
Found this on ebay, is it any good?

Item Description

NEW 1000 Watt - 36 Volt Motor with Bracket (Style: MY1020-B)

MY1020 36 Volt, 1000 Watt, 3000 RPM, 35.6 Amp, permanent-magnet motor. 11 tooth sprocket for 8mm (T8F) chain. 12 gauge power leads with standard 1/4" push-in connectors.
Mounting bracket measures 4-3/4'' x 2-7/8'' with 4 mounting holes.

Mounting holes 4'' center to center across and 2-1/4'' center to center across.

Motor Dimensions: 4-1/4'' W x 6'' L not including shaft. 4-1/4'' W x 7'' L including shaft. ___________________________________________________

will this be good enough to power 250 pounds along at a 15+ mph speed?

And will this speed controller work for the motor I posted above?

Controller should be matched with motor. 30 V controller will put strain on the motor and on it self (means , you can't put 36 V batts without risk of blowing controller). You should find 24 - 48 V controller or 36 V > upwards controller (30 - 40 Amps). Read my previous post about Volts and Amps. Also , you should consider either motor is brushed or brush less (cause controllers are different). Motor that you've chosen is OK for you (remember , more volts - more speed, less Amps - therefore , longer ride and you CAN put 48 V on that motor).

As KieranM said (and I paraphrase it) , the inner wheel wouldn't slow down.
It certainly would, it's a DC motor with more load, it will slow down
We are talking about electric motors, so one of two things can happen : either inner wheel is held by friction (stopped) and it will blow the fuse or melt (pulling to much amps) or it will (more likely) spin freely (burn out) and steering would be compromised or it will brake drive (chain , sprocket , axle or whatever). It is very hard to "stall" electric motor like internal combustion engine and it usually end in tears.

The kids cars I have seen all use a separate motor on each rear wheel, it works for them and the are built

We're talking about turning a corner, this doesn't stall the motor, but even if it did, I have an electric gokart and I think I could lock my brakes and pull 100 amps with
my motor stalled. I'll try it tonight.

this is with IC engines, but if you think an electric motor won't slow like an IC engine then, it won't be persuasive.

I did wrote about worst cases (with dual motors) and tried not to be too "scientific". Yes it could be driven with dual motor setup , but that isn't happiest solution and that I was trying to emphasize. As for kids cars , it's a matter of weight and speed. With "more serious" setups on go karts (for kids of 14 upwards and adults) , combination of weight and power can cause said problems , not necessarily ,but it can be kill joy . So it's my opinion to avoid that and approach the problem on a safe side . Decision is up to an owner/builder .

I think all this stuff about dual motors has gotten a bit off topic. to get people's minds back to the topic, i wanted to let you know that I WILL BE USING ONLY 1 MOTOR!!! so please take that discussion to another thread if you still must argue over it.

Sorry about off (if it was off) , but we weren't "arguing" , just making opinions (at least ,I was) . Idea (and the title includes that word) is to make suggestions about your future setup and trough discussion you should be able to decide what is best for you. We all try to help/inform you (so far) and that's why I took the time to clarify for you stuff about electrical power. If you were explicit earlier ,about using one motor (after KieranM posted his suggestion) , there would be no debate about dual motor setup at all. React promptly , if you don't like something (e.g : I don't want two motors) and that will focus the discussion, that is how stuff work on forums ;). Keep up your build and keep us posted about the progress you make :thumbsup:

And if you had two 1000 watt motors I wouldn't want you to avoid using them because of what >I< consider improper information.

I did this yesterday and the motor drew 100 amps + or - a few amps.
I'll post the youtube video of my gokart again in case you haven't seen it,
you might gain a little info from it, or
any of the several hundred other electric gokart videos.

jammer i only brought up the idea of two motors to help you out. on your budget i thought that you would like an idea that would give you power and not cost alot. getting a motor that has alot of pulling power in one unit is most of your money gone not to mention the speed controller you would need and the cost of it. the twin motor was an idea that most use because it costs less.
