Need advice on 24 volt motors

I am building a colapsable golf cart variation that can be hauled under my fifth wheel hitch in the back of my truck while I haul my fifth wheel camper. its is to be a two seater and I am looking for around 12 MPH and a 5 mile or so range. It is to be used for driving around campgrounds on our weekend camping trips. (I am VERY lazy...but love to build stuff)
I have ZERO experience with electric motors. I intend to use 2 deep cycle marine batteries and maybe 2 of the little 24 volt 350 motors that are all over ebay for cheap. They have #25 chain sprockets on them and are reversable. has anyone here played with those motors? are they durable? how much power and speed are available in them? any help is greatly needed and appreciated.

i'd get the biggest 24v motors you can. I'm looking at a similar setup. THe batteries seem to be the most expensive part. I've seen some go carts that use 2 500w scooter motors and they zip w/ one person. i seriously doubt youll get good results w/ the 350 watters w/ two people plus the weight of the cart itself.

I found that link here and went and tripled my knowlege. I now know NEXT to nothing and yes..You are correct..I will need 500 or perhaps even 650 motors. What are you thinking of building? will it have two motors as well? car batteries?

Car batteries are not intended at ALL for deep cycle or cyclic use. Don't even think about them.

A 400-500 watt motor (two of them) will work fine. Gear them LOW, and you'll have no problem. You aren't exactly looking for speed either, so you could make it 36V worth of batteries on a 24V motor (of virtually any wattage) and gear it low, plenty of torque then.

If there's one thing, do NOT get those 250-350W motors, they have tiny amounts of torque. TINY.

Below average deal. You know how long that'll take to charge?! On an 1.8 amp charger?!

Those throttle those hall effect $7 ones (yes, $7, look it up, w/ shipping), another cheap throttle that dumps amps into the motor from the start, lower quality unknown brand 20ah batteries, and those 36V China chargers. Nothing special, but will do fine.

1000 watts will be plenty. Especially geared low. With 60V and 750W motor, I left treadmarks everywhere. (That's a good thing)

Two 650's would do just fine also, problem is the controller. Can whatever controller you take HANDLE it? It may be rated at only 30 or so (let's just say) amps, but under hard acceleration (and average gearing), the maximum number of amps could exceed 50-60 amps.

Batteries are one thing to worry about, if you need help, I know a eBay seller who sells those 20-21aH batteries for about $10 apiece (no kidding). He has a few hundred of them.

just for comparison reasons. I built a 600W Go-PED with two 12v 20Ah batteries. It goes about 20-25mph and lasts somewhere between 5 and 10 miles (not exactly sure as I don't like to flatten my batteries completely) or about an hour of WOT. Mind you the scooter with batteries and motor weighs about 60lbs and I weigh 150, so it's pushing 210lbs (approx) and it zips me around just fine. BTW the sprocket is a 15T wheel is 45T (#25chain) and the tire is 6" dia. If you wanted better range, speed, and power introduce multiple gears into the equation. It will be more difficult to build, but will also be more fun. I am thinking about re-working mine to incorporate multiple gears, but I have been working on some other projects instead.

Not to be a discourager of DIY builds as I love them, but why not get a "working" golf-kart and work on making it collapse.

Today I was CONVINCED that a Rascal rear differential used as a jackshaft to chain drive the tow rear wheels independently was the way to go..Now I am thinking that THIS might be it. I need it to push a bit more wieght than they suggest though. I wonder if TWO motors with two sets of batteries would work smoothly?

yeah, chicks dig it, but they usually don't understand it LOL. If they did we would have more pull than Heff.
I was simply throwing it out there because you stated that you don't have experience with the electrics, but you have to start sometime right?? Simply making a golf-cart fold beneath a 5th wheel and have the power and strength to cruise two people around will be a challenge enough. By the way, my PED folds down as well, it would easily fit beneath the trailer. You could always build two of them...Mine cost me about $400 by the time I was done with everything, $150 of that being the batteries, but if someone can hook it up with $10 batteries, you could get them done for about $300.
I use to use mine to ride into work, and then ride around the shop to save walking time, and ride it home for a recharge.

I got my hands on some motors..24 volt .83 HP 3350RPM motors. Made right here in Wisconsin.Dumore Corporation. I picked them up brand new for ten bucks each. I bought two Rascal scooter motors and differentials from the same guy. Those appear to have potential as well. Tomorrow starts Reaserch and Development phase one (melting stuff and breaking things)..I can only read so much before I get out the welder

Goddammit, today it just so happens that the person he was selling the batteries for had a nice little disagreement. I received it in an email when I asked him to list some more (or buy them directly from him with the eBay prices)...

Now I have to look for 3 batteries all separately.. Darn.

And I'm completely honest about this, I'm not trying to keep a good deal from any of you, I'd love to help out, but apparently "I did not get a good enough answer from him" and he doesn't want to do it anymore.




ON THE OTHER HAND, if you're looking into some "real" battery packs, check out the LiFePO4 battery packs. **** expensive, but very compact.

35 amps per motor? I'd say at least a 100amp controller.

But maybe if you're on a TIGHT budget, a 50 amp controller would do (just watch the throttle).

The motors are about 581 watts worth of power, (pretty high amperage though!) seeing that 1HP is about 700HP

700*.83(HP) = 581W

So anyways, they SHOULD power them all right. But 600 watts is still pretty low for.. how much weight?

Whowhee! Nice scooter there. Just wondering, but wouldn't that be a TAD slow? 3:1 gearing, 6" tires, and two hugebutt 20aH batteries? Range should be amazing (20aH! )

But on the other hand, wouldn't all that weight bog the motor a bit?

I went to the Northern store in West Allis Wisconsin and just got home...Chain,sprocket,axles fenders...$400.00
That is a budget suprise! I got the motors for **** near free..I got the 4 wheeler for $125.00 ans still need the cointroller,throttle...****..I am going to have a grand in this thing REAL quick.
