Ok I got my clutch from tractor supply. When I went to put it on there was no hole to screw it secure it to the drive shaft. the kind I got needs a screwin the drive shaft to hold it on. So I look throught my bucket of extra bolts ect and cannot find a bolt that will fit. Does any one know what kind of bolt needs to be put in the drive shaft so I can secure the clutch to the shaft. I an running the harbor freight engine 6.5 HP. I have looked throught the manuel but it has no refrence to the bolt size.

thanks for your help.

It's most likely a set screw that you need in there. It might have had one that fell out somehow. Pics would help. Harbor sells a kit that has many different set screws in it.

OH! The hole in the engine shaft. I was thinking a hole on the clutch itself, but I guess I read wrong. Well, it will most likely be a metric bolt that needs to be in there. Unfortunately I don't have that engine so I can't tell you the threading, but my engine has a hole like that too and it's metric. I just measured mine and it's not metric, it's a 5/16" hole with a 24 thread.

Well, I used a gauge to figure out the thread and then I took a tap with that thread and of that size and it threaded into the hole just fine. No I did not force the tap into it so that it would make new threads... LOL:thumbsup:

Check page 3. See specification chart and find Drive Shaft Type. According to chart, bolt should be 5/16x24 but clearly is not. I swapped out 3 known good bolts, from various engines, which are 5/16x24 and will not thread into clone. I misplaced my thread gauge so I can't check it, but appears to be metric. Harbor Freight manual (at least in my case) is a definite misprint regarding this thread size.
So much for Chinese Quality Control. An apparent industry wide problem. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has run into this bolt size dilemma.

Well that would certainly suck if it was something different, but hopefully we've been of some help.

i secured my clutch to my shaft by using a grub screw, have a look on your clutch on the opposite side to the sprocket for a small threaded hole

Thanks for all your imput. I am thinking of just taking the engine down to the hardware store and just trying to test every screw.

In the last picture you can see there is no hole for any set screw. I thought about drilling and tapping one my self but as you can see the clutch opens to 3 arts so I would still need a shaft bolt.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am thinking of just returning the clutch and getting one on Ebay that has the set screw.

Thanks again you all have been very helpful.

For the most part, I use MaxTorque clutches. This clutch uses 2 set screws one which locks down on key (not built in) and is super secure and bullet proof. Second set screw just tightens down onto bare shaft and hole is not necessary.
Slide clutch on shaft (bottoms out) and tighten set screws. Done.
Key stock is readily available. Sold by the foot (usually) and is inexpensive.

Correction!!!

By mistake I grabbed the wrong bolts. I picked out 3/8x24. Clone crankshaft bolt is 5/16x24. Really bad mistake on my part. Sorry guys.
