i hate to burst your bubble but Its been thought of and done before, its called a RAGB (right angle gear box). This is how some riding lawmowers work, a peerless 700 transmission is used in many rear engine riding mowers and is a simple right angle gear box with 5 different speeds. The reason people dont use vertical engines is not because its hard to do but because it takes up twice the room of a horizontal engine and is just not worth it, for all the space they take up you could run a small sled engine.

lol you didn't burst my bubble dude that's why i said any input appreciated. And i didn't know that this came to my mind when i was playing around with it, I noticed that one of the pullys rotated 3x as much as the other. see where i'm going with this and only one gear. either way i'd love to do a sled engine to it isn't really in my budget it this time you know i'm getting these engines for free.

either way i don't start building until june so i have enough time to research and experiment to see what works, i want this to come out perfect.

Well you can get a ragb for 50-100, the a centrifugal clutch for 30-40 so thats going to be 80-140, you could easily get a sled engine for that.

Craiglist... I just saw a running 79' pantera for $50 just needed a belt and a wieght for the primary clutch. I got a free 750 triple that needed crank bearings, and i've seen tons of other $100 steals

I just dont see why you wouldnt use a sled or mc engine if you can get them for the same price as a clone.

I agree with the Kaptain, but I 'm after a 4 stroke with a cvt for my buggy. I want torque and lower rpm, and I don't want to shift.

2 or 4 stroke? industrial or performance? you cant determine HP by CC, for example my 100cc 4 stroke dirt bike puts out around 8hp max, where as a 5.5hp tecumseh is 200cc.

4 storke off a bike i just looked it up the engine has around 3.5-4hp. sorry about that i'm still learning bit by bit.

But other then that hears a picture of the gearbox that i was talking about i finally got it out, took it apart, cleaned out all that stiff grease that was in it and put it back together.

other then that

I'm stuck on working with what i have.

So I'm just throwing my idea out there...

*Can i cut the longer side of the shaft off and take off atleast an inch off the shorter end and weld a sprocket on it?

*Also use it side ways as is in the picture?

Because i noticed that for every 1 rotation of that shaft the pulley rotates 7.25 times.

Thanks,
Eric

fill it up half way with 75-90w gear oil, and tap a hole for a breather, put in a fitting and attach a hose to that. Also a few heavy duty straps around that case wouldnt hurt, i doubt it could handle the stress of a kart without the cases splitting. Are those gears steel or aluminum? if there aluminum forget it, if there steel then strap the case fill it with oil and hope it doesnt split.

What size engine do you plan to use?

Yes you can cut off the axle and weld a sprocket, but you may want to add a pillow block to save that bushing.

I dont understand what you mean by "run it sideways"

i think ther gears are steel since they were kind of heavy.

the engine i plan on using is is probably 8-10hp. idk the brand since I'm getting it for free from my brother.

pillow block?

and by side ways i mean the shaft sitting upward and the pulley on the side. (just turning it sideways)

Pillow block bearings, to support the shaft, those bushings are pretty weak.

Why would you want it on its side if its a vert engine? im confused...
