My next engine project...Briggs OHV

All right!

This one came to me on a Kart I picked up some time back. I promptly removed it and replaced it with a predator 212.

I am guessing this is a Briggs and Stratton OHV but I have no idea what the displacement is or anything else about the engine. It is completely trashed. No real ID stickers left anywhere on it. So I am gonna tear it apart and clean it up and see what I can do with it. It will run somewhat. But like crap and only choked so the carb will get a good sonic bath.

If anyone knows what it is before I figure it out let me know but if I get a chance I will start tearing into it soon!

I believe that is an early model briggs 850 series, the older ones came with that carb while the new ones have the bowl which looks like a Honda carb.
Now if I’m correct it’s a 208cc clone engine, I have the new style one with the updated carb on my kart.

The series number for me was on the underside below the valve cover. Weird spot, it was tricky to find for me also

I have a similar, but not identical OHV Briggs that I got with a purchase, non-running.
I also have a big knowledge gap on these later horizontal shaft OHV B&S engines--the kind you might use on a go kart. They're strange birds.

Model number might be stamped into the valve cover. Mine is, right beside the hose on the valve cover in Pic 1.

Mine is 126312-0023-B1-070323-FD

Fairly certain it's a 205cc 800 Series.

The blocks are completely different, and on the intek briggs hellion has the valves are higher, therefore the valve cover is taller. And yes the tank is steel.
Look up:
Briggs 950 series
Briggs 550 series
Or Briggs cr/Xr series.

Hellions engine is the same block as an animal
Your block sir is the same as a Honda.

It is most definitely not a 800 or 900 sreries engine. I mean look at the blocks as well as exhaust port location. And carb stud angle, all completely different.

Yea, mine looks like a Chinese clone, that's what my original thought was anyway. But it does have a Briggs logo on the carb and valve cover.

Yes, there is some rust inside the tank, I would say it is cheap sheet metal of some sort, not plastic but definitely not steel!

Yes it is a rebranded clone motor that’s why the logo is on the valve cover. I can get pictures of mine if you would like, it has everything the same as yours, just the updated carb

So Briggs has engines built and rebranded for them now? In other words they farm out products then? I don't know who builds what any more

For the most part these days... no one really builds their own stuff.... too expensive...

Well briggs still has their vanguard engines which they build themselves in the US. But other than that I bet they have someone else build them

This evening I decided to take this thing down for first round cleaning so I can actually work on it as it's filthy...so here is some before and after shots of the covers removed and the numbers.

I basically just hosed it down with simple green and a brass bristle brush then blasted it with the pressure washer. Tomorrow I will get more involved.



















So would I be right to guess this is another gx160 sized clone or thereabouts?

I wasn’t sure if you were telling me to look up 950 and 550 series, etc or him, and also who were you talking to when you said the engine is not a 800 or 900 series? I admit it, I’m not sure what I have.

I don’t mean to hijack or derail either, this is just good for the info.

Iron rusts, steel should not...not good steel anyways

Good steel shouldn't attract a magnet either...if it rusts or pulls with a magnet then it has a high iron content making it a poor quality steel...so there you go...I know in the scheme of yard gokarting it doesn't matter but in other circles it makes all the difference in the world.

Yea it is kinda confusing now that I’m reading it back.

I was saying for either of y’all to look up the 950 and 550 briggs engines, they are very similar except the 550 is a clone of a GX160 I think, whereas the 950 is more of a clone of a GX200


And again about he 800 and 900 engines I was talking to both of y’all. I apologize again. The 800 and 900 series are both Briggs own design and use the same block as the animal, where animal engine performance parts will work with them.


800/900 series- animal performance parts

550/950 series - Honda performance parts

Hope this clears stuff up, and I was saying that Wes’s engine is definitely not a 800/900 series engine

In all honestly, this looks like they branded a clone engine as their own.......
Take a carb and an exhaust from a clone, see if itll fit the Briggs"clone".....Im guessign itll fit...

I’m fairly certain it is. As I have said before I have the briggs 950 series which is their 208cc clone. And I have used Honda parts for it as well as the stage 1 kit from GPS that’s made for the predator.
The exhaust port and carb is all the same, and it does in fact have a metal cam and not plastic unlike some briggs cams.



So far everything that I have used from a Honda/predator has bolted right up on mine

But it's got the bonus points for carrying the Briggs name!
Still, I'm kinda surprised Briggs would also make a Honda clone, but hey.
Businesses have to make money, and with the clones, that's easy.
