My first Kart Project

Well, i made a mistake of lubing up my old chain. (it needed it). It now is too loose to run. I didn't want to add anymore washers to my engine mount so i ordered a new chain. Will be here this week. I think i'm going to take the washers off when the new chain comes and try and see if i can get it to work without it. I have 40 links right now i think i'll start out with 39, then if too loose go to 38. My friend has a real chain breaker so i'm going to let him setup the chain for me.

If this goes well i'll just need to clean up the rust and then get it ready for paint.

Still having a hard time finding the right tires for the price. I need to shop locally as the shipping just kills the prices for 2 front tires with rims that are 4". I think 80 bucks is too much for the 2. 60 is fine, but 80 is pushing it.

lol. It was so bad looking and dirty. It will be nice to start with a new chain.

OK. New problem.

My clutch and sprocket do not line up. I want to say that the sprocket on the axle is about a 1/4 inch off. Is there a way to line this up? I've never messed with this stuff before but my guess is you can adjust the sprocket hub on the axle.

I'm going to be taking everything apart soon anyways when my new split sprocket comes in. My guess is there is room where the sprocket sits on the keyway. What i don't know is how the sprocket sits in the same spot on the axle. Taking it apart is going to tell me all this.

Just thought i would ask you guys first so i know what i'm getting into.

Yes, you can loosen the 2 set screws that hold the hub tight on the axle. Line it up, then retighten.... Post a pic of your hub..... Just to be sure you don't have some off the wall type......

I'm glad you posted the pic. That one is a compression type. Loosen the bolts around the center. Tap an it. You should see one side goes into the other. It has a slot cut into it. When you tighten the bolts, it sucks it into the other side,the cup, and causes it to clamp down on the shaft..... IIRC..... I had one like that.....

I got the bolts out easy, But nothing is budging. I've hit it with the hammer a few times and its not moving. Still trying.

lol you guys are Edit button crazy. That is the first time i haven't hit edit. If you look at 90% of my posts i hit edit.

Back on topic.

Since i have to take everything apart to line the chain (and put new 72t sprocket on on) i'm going to work on sanding and painting. Unfortantly taking the seat off has shown some issues. I am going to have to weld new seat mounts since they are so rusted and thing and broke from the weld. I'm also going to have to fix the bottom seat as the wood is rotten and the bolts ripped out.

SO its back to square one.

Mikl99, have you posted a whole shot of your kart? I am not remembering what you're tooling on.....

Yea, I figured out they were T-nuts after searching. Already picked some up for when it is time. Also picked up some stock steel 2"x36" at home depot for 7 bucks. Might be expensive but i was there and i didn't think 7 bucks was bad. I'm going to use it for the seat mounts because the ones that are there are just too badly rusted and flimsy. I'm not sure if i can save the back mount yet but i'll wait and see. as for the floor steel. I think i'm going to leave it. The metal seems strong. I got a ton of the rust off. There is still some black pain that just wont strip, but i think the primer will be fine going over it. I'm not too concerned about it. I think the primer will do its job.

The Kart is pretty much stripped. I just need to clean it up and finish near the axle. I haven't been able to get the back tires off (well 1 tire) as the bolt is frozen. I just don't have the tools for it so i'm going to take it over to my brother's garage and let him do it.

Also for the new problem. Can you guys see what i didn't see with my inexperienced eye when i bought the kart?



Yep. The frame is bent. Again this is out of my skill. I'm going to ask my neighbor who works on restoring cars to bend it for me. No way am i even going to attempt it.

Hopefully he can do it. I don't want to trust my brother with something like that :lolgoku:

I am happy with my progress at this point. I can tell you that i have already gained so much experience now that i have taken most of it apart. I don't know much, but i know more today than i did a month ago. These are all things now that i know what to look for on my next kart :wai:

Also you guys have been a real great help.

i think that might be the camera, i didn't notice anything while looking it over. I'll check again later.


So i went home at lunch and took a look. Standing straight over the back tires they look straight. I'll chop that up to the magic of camera's.

Man, that floor board steel looks so much worse in that camera than it does in real life.
