My electric powered cart

I'm making a cart ( http://bit.ly/bA40in ).
It needs to be able to transport around 150 KG (including cart/engine/weight). It does not have to be fast, 10 km/h (6 mph) will do.. any higher would transform the cart from a "tool" to a "vehicle" subject to local DMV regulations

Power inverters (12/24v dc to 230v ac) are very expensive over here. So I was wondering if a 1000w inverter will provide enough power from a large 100-200 AH battery, to drive this contraption.

What do you guys think would happen if this cart was powered by let's say a 2200w electric chainsaw motor. (a more expensive alternative is a 1500w 1400RPM electric motor).

The inverter can handle 2000w momentarily, and 1000w sustained. Will these engines put to much strain on the inverter, or do you think they will be able to propel the cart without maxing out in terms of watt's used?

Why simple , when it can be done complicated...First , power inverters are somewhat expensive everywhere . Second , I don't really understand why you want to do it in that way. I believe that a proper way is to use DC el. motor (24V, or better yet 36V) and put it on the cart with battery (DC-DC converter is needed if you have only one battery). Electric wheelchairs use, for an example, (often) 24V system to move around and some of the users are heavy . My suggestion for you is to find some used DC system (from wheelchairs, el. scooter or whatever...) and than to decide what to do for el. supply (depending on a system).
And to answer your original question - 1000 W inverter means 230 V at 4,3 A , so check the motor (there should be a plate or a sticker with data) Amp rating; not to forget, when you start your heavy cart , motor will be "pulling" few times more Amps than it's nominal rating (which will blow the fuse on your inverter).

It's surprisingly hard to find a 24/36v engine around here. While 220V AC engines are everywhere.

Maybe I'll just have to ebay an 36v engine + controller. Do these 2 items seem appropriate?

When gearing this for high torque and low speed (can't go faster than 6 MPH), I still want it to be able to drive fast in small inclines. Are there any problems I should be aware of?

Have anyone tried not using a pre-made engine controller, and maybe using something like a timer or a lego mindstorm control unit connected to a relay to just turn a dc engine on and off very fast many times per second to control the speed?

Well first, theres no such thing as an electric engine. Second, power inverters produce alot of heat which means wasted power. Try electricscooterparts.com.

Maybe if you use a 240v dimmer switch it might limit it? Not sure how they work though so. But prinicply, im saying have:

Battery -> Variable Resistor of some kind to limit max power -> throttle switch -> Motor

Hope that makes a small amount of sense, though im sure it didnt :lol:

i have heard bad things about dimmer switches, like i said just rig you a screw or something so you can only move the throttle a certain amount.
