Ok, so I've been stalking craigslist hunting for go karts. There's not many in oregon, so when one pops up, it's either a professional $2500 racer, or a $600~ off roader or yard kart. No real deals.

So, I was stunned to find what I did. A Murray Red kart, with the roll cage and two 6hp engines for $75.

So, I called the guy and drove there that evening. It just barely fit in our pickup. It has brand new paint, and both engines work! The listing was taken down immediately after we called, an hour after it was posted. We were the first of six interested people to arrive.

The roll cage needs bolts, and a few miscellaneous bolts are needed here and there. The main things I need now are:

A sprocket and brake drum assembly
Bolts
A new back wheel, one is missing bearings.

I pretty much stole this thing for $75. This guy just wanted it out of his garage. It has some plates and such that I'll need to screw back on. The throttle cable is hooked up to the Briggs and Stratton, the other engine is a Tecumseh, which needs an oil change.

So, if I can please get some help with finding a new wheel and sprocket+drum, I'd be extremely grateful!

It's a one wheel drive kart, so I'm going to convert it to a live axle as soon as I completely fix it.

Here are a couple of pictures(link below), I'll post more soon. The brake band is assembled, the seat is in great shape, the roll cage is great, I'm pretty happy needless to say.

Currently I'm trying to figure out of the brake band is bent. Also, there is a weird bearing thing jutting out next to the brake with no apparent purpose...

Also looks like I'll need a clutch. New gear for the clutch, sprocket for the wheel, brake drum...

I think the brake drum needs to be 6". I may need a new band too.

One more question, is a 72tooth sprocket and a 12 tooth clutch good for this kart?

Yes as long as you don't have Rear tires Taller than 15".

And those front tires look Questionable. They look like Harbor Freight wheels and those things break!

Oh good. Bearings are cheap and you can get them from the Kart suppliers linked previously with your chain and Clutch.

[edit] But hey if your wheelbarrow ever needs a tire you've got 2 now lol

You want High speed wheel bearings. On Karts they are pretty standard 1 3/8" OD and 5/8" or 3/4".
Although It not the best way to measure bearings in this case a tape measure would work. Its not like they are metric or exact measurements to the .001 are needed.

Post pics of your wheels and we can help you double check what type of bearing is needed.

Ok, I took pictures of the wheels. I can't upload them at the moment, so here is a link to a folder where I have just those pictures:

Need a new drive wheel.

New discovery: Both rear wheels are unusable.

The drive wheel is, well, not a drive wheel, and both of them are missing bearings.

The main problem is, the holes that would hold bearings are under 1" wide (3/4"?) , so there's nowhere near enough room for a bearing piece (3/8" or less of room) since the wheel goes on a 5/8 bolt, as far as I know... There are also only two holes, so no space for a wheel hub.

I can take care of the fronts wheels and everything else on the kart for now, but I need to find a 15x6.00-6 tire installed on a drive wheel (I'd rather not reinstall my current tires), and I can't find one.
Also of course a new right rear non-drive wheel, but I already found several of those, those are basically mower tires with upgraded bearings. I'm not sure if they have a spot for a wheel hub though.

Does anyone know of any places that have a drive wheel and tire that big? If not, I'll have to try something smaller.

Thanks

Ok, great. Thanks to you, I've found a decent drive wheel: http://www.gopowersports.com/6-drive-wheel-assy/

Does the flange for the sprocket and brake drum have threads, so that I can attach them correctly?

Maybe I should start a new thread just about the wheels. I need a drive wheel assembly and an identical wheel, but 15" tall and wide, preferably! I can't find ANY full assemblies with a 72T #35 sprocket, so I guess I have to assemble one myself, but I know nothing about that! :mad2:

By thi picture it looks like that comes with nuts and bolts.
Personally I find it less confusing if you keep 1 thread going.
A 72t sprocket and brake drum will bolt directly to that Wheel and hub.
