Murray Explorer TAV cover options

Yes, i'm 100% positive. I measured both of my Murray's jackshaft bearings with calipers and they were both 1.563". I'm wondering if I should get a jackshaft sleeve and go with a slightly larger O.D. but more available high speed bearing? Or am I looking in the wrong place for a direct replacement?

I found the issue with the jackshaft, its extremely worn down in one spot which was causing uneven chain tension all the time. In my first picture you can see the full extent of the wear, the cause of which is still unknown to me.

My second picture(sorry about the blurriness) is where the shaft is currently and there's no more shaft wobble at all! I went ahead and repacked the sprocket side jackshaft bearing because it felt really gritty, the grittiness is pretty much gone now and rolls much smoother.

The third picture is when everything was reassembled. To get the slop out of the shaft I moved the jackshaft about a 1/4 to 3/8 inch to the right if you're looking at the back of the kart. Luckily I had a spacer just thin enough, where it would cover the bad spot on the shaft and the sprocket still lined up perfectly! I'm so happy with my purchase now! I was a bit skeptical at first when I got it home since the chain wouldn't stay tensioned. It all checks out now!

It was probably a mix of a nut that wasn't tight on the jackshaft as well as a spacer that was spinning on the dgaft. Atleast that's my guess.

After thinking about it, i wonder if the chain was too tight for a long time. Idk if that is possible or not without the chain eventually breaking

No, more like it was run until the bearings wore out on the inside and somebody kept running it and it cut the crap out of the shaft. Then someone else came along later and replaced the bearing and tried to cover it up. You could have those groves filled in by someone with a welder and then machined back down flush. The redneck way...or way I would is fill it in with my mig welder and rough it in with a file then stick it back in the jackshaft assy with the rough part sticking out so as to use it as a make shift lathe and then finish it off carefully under engine power with files and sandpaper

Thats a good idea Wes! I'll do that in the near future. I'm always extra careful around fast moving parts! Its not giving me an issue now since I covered it up again lol. It spins true and smooth with no play of any kind

Never box yourself in little brother...and as always think outside that box...come up with ideas and ask others what they think about it...


that is nothing new...typically a person would take a worn axle shaft to a machine shop to have it welded up and machined backed down and reinstalled into their axle housing of their car if their axle bearing failed...or in some cases a sleeve can be pressed over the damaged area and an oversized bearing installed over the axle where that sleeve is...saving a lot of money in replacement costs...

just something I learned the hard way and after the fact...

you know...there are times...

I just wish I could build a big fire and tap a big keg of beer around a cold frozen lake and have all you guys gather round and pass on all the things I've learned and seen...and share a cold mug...and not let all the things I have seen and learned go to pass...and I don't mean just go-kart crap...

So...you guys have a good night. Just remember that whatever endeavor lies in front of you has already been achieved by someone else. You can accomplish it as well. If a man or machine has built it then you can fix it or make it better I promise you that!

You sound almost like my dad lol. Thats not a bad thing. He also says that if a man or machine could build it in a factory, he can fix it. Some of that has also rubbed off on me over the last few years while helping him get his turbo street cars going again. I'd love to sit around and share stories about life lessons and such! That really sounds like a good time!
