not sure if you've got the torque converter bolted down like that, but you actually want as much distance from the torque converter sprocket and axle sprocket as you can reasonably get. reason being that if you have a small 10 tooth sprocket right next to a big 60 tooth sprocket, the chain tends to slip right over the smaller sprocket if there's ANY slack. now move the 2 farther apart, and the chain wraps around the smaller sprocket better, and you have much less chain slippage.

so... if that's how you were gonna bolt the TC on - don't do it! flip the driven clutch side up so that the assembly is at a 90 degree angle, giving you as much distance between the 2 sprockets as possible! sure, you'll need a longer chain - but it'll totally be worth it!

now if you were planning on throwing a jackshaft into that mix for further gear ruduction (more torque!), then ignore my above comment, because you will be going from closer-sized sprocket to sprocket, which will improve your chain grab.

Thanks for the info but thats the only way it will bolt on. But I can slide it back & forth. I may have to add a jack shaft. Thanks again.

Yep its a bit light but I was told it was rated up 13hp.If it last long enough that i can get my polarasis 250 motor ready ill be happy.

Some of the knock off comet 30 series are "rated" to 13HP. This is just to get you to buy them. A genuine Comet 30 series is only rated up to 8HP, so I don't think a knock off would be able to handle more. You could probably push a genuine TC to 10HP, but you are still going to be going through belts quite fast

I wander why they don't sale the comet 40 in a kit.How would a 40 driver with a 30 driven would work.

here's the deal. unless you're ready to fork out $200+ on a comet 40 (clone) setup - it looks like you will need to make a jackshaft for sure. change your gearing to around 8:1 and you should be ok till you're ready to throw in that ATV motor. by lowering your gearing it will put less stress on the belt. you'll have plenty of torque, just not a ton of speed.

use this calculator to determine what ratio you need depending on tire size to get 24mph (the sweet spot using the under-rated comet 30 with a too powerful motor).

http://www.diygokarts.com/speed-calculator.html

with 18 inch tires you need an 80t axle sprocket and a 10t clutch sprocket. that would be a gear ratio of 8:1.

now go to this calculator and play with the numbers to determine realistic sprocket sizes to achieve the 8:1 ratio.

With a 12T clutch, you are going to need a 12*8 = 96T axle sprocket. This is not practical because it could be larger than your rear tyres. This is why you need a jackshaft.

You could use your 12T clutch, a 36T JS in sprocket, a 24T JS out sprocket and then your 72T axle sprocket. This will give you (36/12)*(72/24) = 3*3 = 9

You can obviously change things around a bit and use different sizes, but you get the idea

you know theirs alot of old tractors etc used belts and idle pulleys for a clutch.I wander why you dont see this setup on karts.I know of a old tractor that the motor slides back and forth to tighten the belt and the old mans been using it for years its a 18hp i think.
