Motorized 10 Speed (Need ID Help)

My buddy picked this off a scrape truck he flagged down. Gave the guy $20 and it was his.

Was wondering what kind of motor it is. And is there a standard size chain for these bike motors? Look like an old kit for a bike.

looks like the engine R97 has on his mini bike.

Also he just set the chain on it. Does it look like it is on the correct way? I was thinking the top chain should go under the roller.

i dont think the tensioner would touch the chain if it went under.

Well it has spark. Great compression as well. The clutch is always engaged though. The pedal is missing. And if it was there it would hit the motor. Could it be set up this way. Push start only? He is thinking he needs it to free will before he tries to start it. If it like my Moped. Then the clutch is only used for starting. But it must disengage after it starts. The clutch arm is out. But the motor will turn over when you turn the back wheel. Push the clutch arm in and no change. Also the clutch arm will just lift out of the case. Nothing holding it in. He pulled the cover but I was not there.

well these engines, i know, are designed to start by you pedaling, and then kicking it into gear.

So it not the same as my moped? With my moped you pedal up to speed. Then pull the clutch until the motor starts. When the motor starts you let out the clutch. So the clutch is just a bump start only. Or you put it on the kick stand. Pull the clutch and kick it over like a dirt bike. If it starts you let out the clutch.

I will look at youtube for sure. But your saying this setup is not the same as me Pedal Moped?

So if this bike had no pedals. It could be a push start only right? Starting it with the clutch like it may be fine?

im not sure. but you probably can coast and kick it in gear.

EDIT: these engines are known for the clutch engager thingy to wear out.

Ya something is going on there for sure. The arm lever pin just pulls right out of the case. We will start there.

So this is a basic kit engine? Parts interchange for the most part. Or do I need to ID the engine?

either it could be like you said bumb start, or, my dad told me many used to do this, you push pennys in the clutch and when you push off they shoot out and act as the engager to start the motor, but then you let it sit a second to get the pennys out, but it messes up a clutch bad, and ID it, theres millions of bike kits flying around, and you cant get one and hope it works, you need to know which you have

He shot pennys thru the clutch? I do not think we will be doing that.

Clutch is likely stuck from sitting. Happens to every motorcycle style engine with a plate clutch that I've ever ridden (not that this engine is the same but a guess).
It also sounds like you're missing parts of the clutch linkage.

they all used to do that, and they used to tear up clutches, i cant see any body doing that now, alot of them used to do it, my dad had a friend with such a worn out clutch the clutch stayed open and he rode and came off a cliff, into a lake and passed away, and theres so many diffrent set ups for thesse between diffrent engines and all, itd knida be like going to a store asking for a random clutch and expecting it to fit

I think he said it has a Dellorto carb if that helps.

Here's how that engine works, I built a few of these so I do know how they work.

The engine is started by pulling in the chutch and peddleing up then drop the clutch this will let the engine spin up and start. You have to keep peddleing a couple strokes to get the bike moving good then. it will pull you along, up to about 28 mph. when you stop you pull the clutch in of course, but when you take off againe you have to peddle the bike up a bit before you release the clutch. it will not pull you from a dead stop. The chain is metric I belive. the clutch should have a pin and a ball that pushes the clutch disks apart. The clutch should be two plates one has 6 rubber pucks that give it the grip.
the clutch is opperated with a brake handle on the handle bars.

im sure if it was answered fully, but i used to work on these engines, and if the clutch arm slides out,then the bottom of it is worn out. take that side cover off, and make sure there is a dowel pin there and a metal ball. if both are there, then you need a new clutch arm.


EDIT** to start the bike, usually you would disengage the clutch and pedal to about 6mph and then engage the clutch and the engine should turn over. and ride on from there

Well we gt the clutch fixed. Not sure what he did yet but it work now. Now the motor mount bolts are stripped inside the case.

No pedal so if he gets it all running we will find a doner bike.

i think a dirt bike motor would be sweet on one of those bikes that lay back. recline and go about 20mph by the river. that would be a fun ride
