I have a 36 volt,500 watt go kart. I have built one just like this a couple of months and everything went fine. With the new build, the battery meter and lock (switch) work, but when I connect the motor it runs without stopping. I tried about everything. Any suggestions?

I assume you have a controller hooked up, right? You're not just directly wiring it to the battery?

Yes, the controller was bought as a mate for the motor and foot throttle.

First, check your throttle wires
...they should be connected red to red (5V+), black to black (-) & other to other (signal) :cheers2:

...or then, maybe it's a faulty throttle :idea2:
(try a known working unit, to see if it solves the problem) :2guns:

a good controller should NEVER run when connected to the battery,
no matter what throttle signal is being fed.

So, my assumption would be..
that is not an EV controller at all but some cheap home appliance controller (fan, pump, whatever)
I must admit there are terrible EV controllers that might not be reliable here,
but you've already been advised to check the throttle signal, so that'd be covered ;)
Oh one thing: many EV controllers DO NOT allow a potentiometer as a throttle signal, so depending on that make sure it's a true ratiometric hall effect throttle you have.

would you mind posting pictures?
that'd help identifying faulty/unsuitable parts and possible issues much quicker.
