Yeah, the steering arms look almost square in your previous pics, now I see the difference in the overhead pics, that setup looks like it works rather well 
The idea behind "brake return" is the disc should have a small amount of runout (around 1mm) to push the pads away from it; a return spring is only to release the caliper enough for that to happen & the pedal & cable should be adjusted accordingly...
