Hey everyone I just recently purchased a Mini Baja bike off of facebook marketplace it isn't perfect as you can see here but shes kept well. Pretty sure shes stock all the way from head to toe. I'm looking to fix up this beauty but I'm a noob when it comes to engines, utv's etc. it currently tops out at like 18 mph and doesn't have much acceleration at all. I have a spare B&S 205cc I am willing to put into it. But I'm wondering what else you guys recommend doing to get this thing stronger? Remember ITS STOCK AS FAR AS I KNOW any help is greatly appreciated.

Things i've currently found wrong / need to fix
  • Pull rope needs to be rewound
  • remove governer
  • Possibly get a torque converter?

Not a bad score--one of the early Warriors too.

I'd leave the engine in it but remove the governor. The governor can also be adjusted for a higher top engine speed, above the industry standard of 3600-3900 revs, but I am not personally familiar with the method.

The other most cost effective mod is to upgrade to a TAV/torque converter as it allows variable speeds all along the powerband.

What is the size and/or horsepower rating of the engine it currently has?

Nice find!

So when you say stronger, how much stronger?

I have a 2014 model Baja Warrior, and did some stuff to it.

Torque converter
Straight pipe (with muffler, dang neighbors!)
K&N style air filter
Re jet to a .036"

She pulls hard, tops out at about 40-42, and sounds great

I started with just a TC, and it would get up to speed, but took longer. The re jet and air flow stuff helps low end a lot, if you gun it from a stop it will stretch your arms back

40 might not sound fast, but once you get up there it feels pretty fast :D

As for the governor, I left mine in, and did the "cord/spring" trick to get it to rev higher. No issues with it at all

You can get a TC on ebay anywhere from $60-80, and there is a full upgrade kit on ebay as well for about $85, but it's for a Predator engine

Speaking of engines, I would just buy a predator, tons of aftermarket and knowledge is abundant on it as well. Look on eBay long enough and you can find one for about $80!

One last thing, the ebay TC will have to be cut to fit on the frame with the engines. I bought one that is made specifically for the Baja and is a bolt on fit, other than adjusting the chain

Hope this helps!

I purchased a TC off ebay for around 70$ I already have that briggs & stratton 9hp 205cc engine that I'll put on the bike(will take governer out once I get the required aftermarket mods). I'll take the stock engine out. I'm looking for a straight pipe exhaust that will sound like a motorcycle. I want it decently loud to turn heads. Any recommendations for air filter + straight pipe for the 9hp b&s?

P.s this forum has been nothing but a major help to me in my projects. Thanks everyone who takes the time to help

There is a 9HP 205cc Briggs?

Anyway, most 8HP+ 4 stroke engines I've seen were bigger than 205cc and had 1" crankshafts.
If the engine you plan to use has a 1" shaft, then you'd need a TC Driven Unit with 1" Bore - not a 3/4" Bore like the most common 30 series TC kit

I linked the 9hp 205cc engine in the op. I'm pretty sure it's 3/4" please correct me if I'm wrong

pull rope will be easy, you can go to a hardware store and get some 'paracord' if the old rope is bad. To service the pull rope you just unbolt the three bolts on the side cover and then you have access to the shroud, there is one bolt with a shoulder holding the whole contraption on there. Since its old, you want to just remove that bolt (careful theres a spring under the bolt under tension) and then you can grease it up under there, then install new cord.

Torque converter swaps are pretty easy, and there are a ton of videos out there on youtube for the baja warrior, baja heat, etc (all the same bike esentially) installing a torque converter on it.

I wouldnt remove the governor until i put a torque converter on it and rode it around. I havent had any complaints with mine with the stock engine and torque converter.

@KartFab yeah I've actually seen tons of videos on YouTube for my exact bike so I don't feel like the TC install will be an issue. And I'm going to ahead and put a new engine on the bike not sure what I'll do with the stock engine. Still having trouble finding performance parts for the 9HP 205cc briggs engine. I read that the animal briggs performance parts are compatible with the 900 series I have. Is that true? If anyone can tell me that is be greatly appreciative

Yeah, i was reading online that the animal parts would be compatible just wanted to get a confirmation before I spent money on a header and air filter. So what ill need is a high-performance air filter + header pipe exhaust(not sure what size/design ill need) id love some recommendations since I'm completely new to this and don't want to waste my money. any help appreciated.

Not sure what it uses, but a straight pipe is going to be LOUD! :p will definitely make people look at you

Where do you find animal parts? Have you seen any specifically for it?

If you have a hard time finding some, I say get a predator, since it will be super easy to find upgrades for.

Since I have no experience with that engine on that bike, I'd have a hard time picking a pipe.
I'm not sure which ones would clear the frame and which ones will interfere with the frame. You got to pick one that fits and you like.

Something like a 1" outer diameter pipe with 0.065" wall thickness is a good place to start.

Check the stud/bolt spacing on the engine you have and check the spacing on the header flange. Depending on the vendor you choose, you might be able to call and verify if it is not posted on the website.

If it were me, before I ordered anything, I'd call them and make sure the parts will fit. I would guess that an Animal motor could possibly have a different head on it. Pure speculation on my part, but it would be smart to check first.
