Nick....if you get the steel bushings....you can get 1/2" id....then you can probably get a bolt that has enough shoulder to hit both sides of the pivot....and you can cut off the excess threads.....

3/8" would probably be fine....tho....although I would use grade 8....and if possible....get as much shoulder as you can....

The bushings need to be 5/8" OD and I have to grind some Of the outside down. So I will look for a better bushing to accommodate a larger diameter bolt. The two pivot points of 18" apart and on a different plane by 1", since bike frame bends inward towards the front. One bolt would be better, just won't happen.
Thanks for the input, those two bolts would be taking all of the weight and pull of the side car. The up and down will not be a problem but the forward pull would be. Glad you made me think of this.

I wasn't suggesting one bolt at all.....I relied on my weak memory...and was thinking you had long pivot tubes...IDKY.... but with only 1" of bolt, bushing, and tube....it sould be easy to find a bolt with a long enough shoulder....

The steel bushings are cheaper than the bronze...you should be ok either way....5/16" just seemed to be pushing it to me...especially for the leading pivot....the trailing one ...not so much....

Edit: Don't know what you have on hand....but...me...I would take a strip of belt sander belt sandpaper (or equivalent) ...a 1/2" strip of duct tape...and tape one edge to the bit..and give it enough wraps to fit loosely in the tube and hone it to fit the steel bushing....at the end of the day...same strength...IMHO....

Hope this helps....

1st pic is the bushing.

2nd and 3rd is the side car style.

4th is how I will mount the drum. I think I will go pick up 2 pieces of angled steel and run those length wise, then weld the drum to the top of angled steel.

This is going to look epic!!

I thank you very much kind, Sir.

I really hope beside looking epic it, it also performs epic and not make the Epic fail list; womp-woomp- wooomp.:lolgoku:

I went and bought enough angled steel to run the length of the drum, but i didn't account for the ridges in drum. So....I went with my original idea of just using the 4 pieces to brace it.

I squared, plumbed, and accurately measure each piece. When I set drum drum on top there were gaps of up to 3mm, that would not be good for securing and welding. I tapped and butted each piece of angled steel up against drum wall, then tacked in place. The pieces deviated inward, since drum is NOT perfectly square itself. So long story short,2 length wise pieces would not have worked.

I did also practice welding on scrap pieces of the drum, since it is thinner than angled steel. I just concentrate the torch on the thick stuff with an occasional pulling of the weld puddle on to the thin stuff.

I might also for extra safety make some steel bands like this.

Pic 1 : Drum mounted to frame. I could only weld the outside out angled steel to the drum, because odd angles inside and my welds were just spattering.

Pic 2: Added a steel strap. 1/8" x 1'' x 6'
I bolted it so I can really tighten it down (in case some reason drum rips from welds while riding in sidecar)

I have to add a strap to the rear but there is not enough frame hanging under drum:oops: So I will weld a piece of flat stock on frame then weld the rear strap to that flat stock. (tomorrow......)

They have plastic trim that will snap on around the edges.. like on the edges of my kayaks, I bet it would work real good on the metal edges as well..
