Self quoting:
6 months is not a long time for an engine to sit even if fuel is left in system. Would just be hard to start initially.
I recently acquired a 7 hp Briggs (1986) from a Jacobsen snowthrower. Tank was half full with very stale gas. Gas was
at least 2 years old. It started on 6th pull and a little coaxing. Tecumseh carbs/engines are somewhat less tolerant of old gas and often require a good cleaning.
As far as varnish/gum goes, I have found that acetone works amazingly well for breaking this goop down with some overnight soaking and a tooth brush. Once it is clean, spray the whole shootin' match with WD-40 and wipe dry.
Just keep any plastics or rubber away from acetone as it will likely dissolve them on contact.
