A fine layer of oil or grease will work too;
Grease: Coat them, leave them for a few days then wipe of any excess
Oil: Soak them for a few days then wipe of any excess

Will it rust later if it gets wet and sprayed off? I know a lot of the barstock i get has a little oil on it (and millscale), but it gets speckles of rust on it if it sits for a while.

Clear coat should do it
I was hoping so. *crosses fingers*

Meanwhile, I'll be recreating it's little brother :D Good luck with your build

So I am guessing This GX390 I just picked up will make it the BIG FAT MONSTER BROTHER? I also picked up a used genuine comet 40 series from a fast go kart flip for $10 (bought kart for $100, sold old engine for $40, kart for $50)

My deadline to run: July 19th

The seat upholstry.... not so sure about.

The general idea is no; the rust won't penetrate the oil/grease...

Sorry I didn't answer that earlier, musta missed it

Everything is relative :lolgoku: ('scuse the pun)

New motor mount

Built the motor mount and jackshaft from scratch out of 3/16th inch steel.

Reinforcement, Motor Mount and Sprocket Guard

Have been messing with fabricating the motor mount. I added an extra square tube to the existing motor mount brackets.

I added 1/8" thick plate to the frame for the motor mount and used my plasma cutter to cut 3/8" wide slots.

I also relocated the sprocket guard as I had to put the sprocket on the other side of the motor mount.

Diamond Plate Accents, Polished Torque Converter

I also used my plasma cutter to cut out some diamond plate accents, drilled 3/16" holes here are there and riveted the plate to the frame..

I polished up/cleaned the torque converter as well.

As you can see, this motor BARELY fits. Im talking 1/4" between the air filter housing and frame, 1/4" between the muffler shroud and frame. Jackshaft sprocket is close to the axle sprocket, which I know will cause some wear issues. Gas tank is about 1" from the seat frame.

The kart is almost finished, just need to make some new seats.

Throttle Return Spring, More Pics, BRAKES!

I added brakes a few days ago. Original kart had a brake band, so I fabricated a bracket to let the mechanical disc brake caliper free float. I also made a little circle looking bracket for the bracket to hold on to.

I noticed that the engine wasn't completely returning to idle, even with the stock return spring and nothing else attached/loose throttle nut.

I drilled a small hole in the throttle arm (bigger that I should have, but all my bits smaller than 1/8" are broken :-( )I then drilled a small hole in the muffler shroud. I pre-wound the spring 2-3 turns after attaching it to the throttle arm so it would be in its 'relaxed' position when i attached it to the muffler shroud.

Its a little late, so I didn't test it out, but the throttle returns completely to its place where it should be when at idle. Just got to finish the seats and add a kill switch. Seats will be put off for a little while, kill switch will be added with pics even before the first test drive

How did you get that torque converter so shiny?

Lol that thread is awesome! I used a fine strand wire wheel to take off the surface rust, then used my 6" bench grinder with sisal/denim/cotton wheels and polishing compound to finish the job.

I haven't gone off the deep end yet, but it's tempting to polish lots of stuff.

So it has been a while since I last worked on my pet project. I first found out it would do wheelies when my nephew was trying to speed away from my stepson, and it almost flipped. The bars on the back contact the ground right around 45 degrees. So far it hasn't flipped over, but i got some skateboard wheels ordered so it wont go up so high.

I took it to my parents last year (where they have snow, not like Texas)

Also, had fixed up the conquest and had the kids ride around in the mud.

So much time has passed that my step son grew so much that it wont pop a wheelie with him in it anymore (a very good thing as he has been kind of small/hit his growth spurt late in life). I regeared it from a 9t to an 8t tooth tye c sprocket for 40/41/420p chain 5/8" bore. My son ended up being too heavy anyway hahaha! Had to put him on the driveway with a slight uphill incline. Oh well, i still have some nephews that I could video in it before they hit their growth spurts. I bought some lights for it, and hooked it up. All of the lights are not hooked up yet, but this is what we have so far.

Small 4 led "off road light" and a small "tail light" (still waiting on LED track to come in. Ill be making a video on that later, but its just for show really, and I dont expect it to hold up to anything once it gets off the pavement.

Grant, With that 8 tooth sprocket you better plan on keeping a couple spares. My brother used to pop them like popcorn. :censored: Finally switched back to a 10 tooth out of aggravation. Too thin.

Did a few engine modifications to midas, and installed a brake light switch. Still got to break it in and get rid of some gremlins. I'm hoping to be able to wheelie on it with me sitting in the drivers seat.

Got electrical finished, battery crapped out from the vibrations? I went all out on this battery, i think i got it for like $10 lmao. one of those 7-9amp hour 12v batteries. Now needing replacement with a high quality one. herrmm.......

Kart tops out around 5500 rpm. timing was at 22 deg btdc stock, and i advanced it to 26 deg btdc. Not sure how fast, but it has 8t jackshaft, 54t axle, 18" tires, so probably around 40ish, just gets there very fast. Im hoping i could put a 10t jackshaft sprocket on it, but may have to settle for a 9t due to clearance issues.

Stinkin loud. So frriggin loud.
wont wheelie with me on it though as it has stock compression ratio and flywheel... But it has so much more torque once you get going that it unseated the tire bead from the rim, and the rim will slightly rotate on the axle, will have to check the key and reseat the bead to the rim, and inflate the tires to max psi.

Im thinking about getting that flex exhaust tubing, wrapping it, and hooking it up to a yamaha r1 muffler (i got a set of them on ebay for $15.
