Nope! Which is exactly what I was afraid of and worrying about... But, a new gasket set and carburetor mounting boot, plus a new choke cable/switch is on the way, all of which it needed anyway.

The pistons have locating pins in the grooves as you already know I am sure, these keep the rings from rotating in the bore and keep them located as so the end gaps of the rings do not line up with any of the ports and get snagged and broke, the end gaps are most all the time phased towards the intake side of the cylinder away from the exhaust port.

It was just a thought at first, but if I DO end up compromising the engine, I think I might just be able to get another very similar if not identical one for fairly little to no cost...

Well, it's been a while, but I put the engine back the way it was, and it no longer runs... Why? No spark. Cause: unknown. Any ideas as to why there's no spark?

New CDI is on the way! May be a Chinese clone, but it was almost a third the price ($45 vs $140), so it was good enough for me! Should have it up and running within the next two weeks or so...
