So I bought a project, a Manco Scorpion 606? I think...need to look at the plate again. This is a father daughter project...

The original 192cc Subaru engine is a boat anchor as the PO left the gas cap off and left it sit out in the weather (if someone can use it for parts, let me know). The PO also took the engine off and torque converter apart. I think I have all the pieces, will get to that later. Overall, it's complete and in good shape.

The plywood supporting the seats was rotten, so I used a couple pieces of 1" PVC foam board to replace the rotted plywood. Pulled the seats, pulled the staples, had to guess about shape of the base and was able to use the back as a template...turned out very good. Shouldn't need to worry about rot for a while...

I bought a Predator today, to replace the Subaru engine. I'm hoping the bases are the same, the crank seems the same, looks like it should be a fairly easy swap.

The torque converter is in pieces, does anyone have a good IPL diagram? I think I have all the pieces, the PO seems to have bagged everything up. I think it's a 30 with a asymmetric belt. I know the driven pulley needs the bumpers.

The chain is rusted but still flexible...the sprockets have wear, so I'm soaking the chain in ATF and I'm going to run it as it is. I'll replace the sprockets and chain later.

More to come...I could probably have it together this week short the torque converter pieces.

:welcome2:

Yes, all small industrial engines (including the Predator) have the same footprint so, it will be an easy bolt-on procedure; as for the shaft, sometimes, they vary between 19mm, 3/4" & 20mm but, IIRC, both Subaru Robins & Predators are 3/4"...

Welcome, sounds like a great find and anything you can bring back to life after death or long neglect is so uniquely satisfying.

Alas...

Thanks, too dark to take pictures...

Is there any issue using the thin foam filter the Predator has? Will it stop dirt ingestion well enough? I have some Amsoil foam filter oil I can soak it with, just thought it would have came with a pleated paper filter?

It will probably stop particulates better than most filters. It does need to be oiled and checked regularly; washed, allowed to air-dry, re-oiled and installed.

You can eventually upgrade the filter with a racing "cone" style fabric filter that can be washed and reused but even these would benefit from an outer "sock" covering. I think they call them Outerwears (trade name).

What are those of you with the Predator engines running for oil? I'd like to use 10w30 Mobil 1 since I have it on hand for everything else.

Yup that's what we use. Unless it's hot all The time. Then maybe sae30 well work. But 10w30 is recommended for that motor.

Thanks, I only ask because I've seen some small engines not respond well to synthetics. I have an older 16hp single lung Briggs that you would swear was worn out...change to a conventional oil and everything goes back to normal.

well, on synthetic or not maybe wait to see if someone else posts back? i'm using synthetic but like you i had it laying around. 10w30 is correct. but i'm not sure if anyone has had long term use with synthetic or not. They are honda clones and the honda engines can run on anything! well practically. :) Not like you are going to put 3000 miles on this thing in a year. Shouldn't need to worry i would think. I'm sure poboy and chancer will come back and give some snide remark about correct oil and how poboy was around when oil was first invented ;)

Meh. Synthetic oils aren't completely worth it. I would use them in something high end or turbocharged though, that got a lot of highway miles. Some new cars have a 10,000 mile change interval...

If synthetic is all you have on hand, then it's fine. But it's always been SAE 30 for lawnmower engines for 60 deg F and above. Since they're air cooled, they run way hotter than liquid cooled engines but they also don't have oil filters so a relatively short change interval really needs to be followed.

My Chevy 2500 Work truck with a lot of Highway miles and Synthetic Goes 9000 Miles.
The computer is pre programmed from the factory for synthetic and it also calculates Highway vs City driving. Tells me when to change the oil. Averages 9000 mi.

For what its worth, I run amzoil 0w40 for 4 stroke powersports. Have that for the snowmobiles and ATV, so I run it in the go kart motors as well.

Decided to buy a new converter assembly, use this one for parts later on. Parts would have cost half of a complete new one...was a no brainer.

I can understand parts costing half the price of a new one. So just buying a full replacement.
But do keep in mind that every single part on there is service able and individually replaceable.
So technically A, TC is never really trash.
