Hey,
Here is a list of what I'm working on. I purchased this Manco last weekend. I know its not perfect but i have gone threw it and I see some potential.
BTW this is going to be a project for my son and I. I have ordered a brand new magneto coil with ground, throttle cable, Throttle peddle spring and I need to know exactly what type of belt to order. I can buy a 3 pack on amazon but I want to make sure I get the right one ect.

Parts that were broken, Throttle pedal spring, Throttle cable rusted in half snapped apart, Tested Magneto coil BAD no spark, Engine has compression and I changed the oil.
The oil was very dark and grey I'm sure its been sitting any where from 6 months to 1 year. The pulley on the back side of the flywheel moves east to west even though its been tightened I'm not sure if that is because when a belt is installed it can have movement?! Everything else looks pretty tight and ready to go once I get the engine running, if the motor is no good then i'll just buy a predator 212cc and go from there. That's about all i can think of right now any help would be appreciated this is my first used purchase and I would love to get this thing running with in this week. I'll post all the picture I have taken. This is my first post on the forum.

Serial Number #1627942
Model #135212 Type 0006-02 Code 94-04-29-2E
Briggs & Stratton 5HP
30 Series Torque Converter With Green Spring
Belt Size (UNKNOWN 5959?)
Pulley Size is 6"
From Center to Center is 6" 3/4

I can't help with the TC/driveline stuff, but I am really good with Briggs flatheads. What exactly is the problem with the engine? Does it simply not start? Does it start and then die? Does it run like crap? We need to start the troubleshooting process.
Here's a link to an online parts manual: https://outdoorpowerdirect.com/pages/partslookup#/s/BRG/135212-0006-02//1/y
Your engine was built on April 29, 1994 at manufacturing plant and assembly line 2E. :2guns:

Thanks for the quick reply. I've been sitting on here waiting patiently lol. The engine WILL NOT TURN OVER. It is getting fuel, I removed the spark plug and u can smell fuel on the end of the plug the compression is good on the engine. There are no leaks, i cleaned the entire drive-train the best I could and It was very dirty someone was doing some off roading in the past seems like its been sitting for quite some time now. The carburetor looks to be in good shape, the air filter was clean on removal. the flywheel surface was very rusty so I used some 800 grit disc to clean it up by hand. i tried cleaning the original Magneto with 800 and reinstalling it. used a business card to gap it and still no spark. I tested it with a 20K meter and shows no signs of life. I ordered a new magneto and it will get here tomorrow. I'm very sure the engine will fire up with the new coil and let it run for a while let the new oil run threw it get it real hot and then drain it out to get any oil crap out ect. My main goal is getting the engine running and check for leaks, bad gaskets ect.. If it runs and seems to be in good working order. I will move on with the other parts, throttle spring, throttle cable install and then figure out belt I need to make it drive! If anyone else has any input please reply! Thanks!!

Yeah,
I actually removed the flywheel to check for points. Some of these engines are older and you dont really know what your getting into until you specify the actual date and yes your correct the last numbers on the flywheel over and pull crank are 94-04-29-2E that is APRIL 29th 1994.

Yeah, I think they made to jump from ignition points to Magnetron in the early 80s or so.
The coil does indeed seem bad from what you say, hopefully that's it. Obviously it flooded due to no spark, but once you get spark, make sure you're not running too rich.
Another thing: Didya check the flywheel magnet? Sometimes they weaken. It should be strong enough to hold a small screwdriver upside down.

Yes its all original, it seems to me the flywheel mag is really strong. Yes i Believe all the engine needs is a solid new coil and a ground to fire it up! Tomorrow we shall see ill post more info soon!

Anyone have knowledge on the drive belt part number for these 30 series pulleys? I found a reference 5959 and a 200938A belt. Unfortunately no auto store sells them if they look up those numbers only V-Belts come up and we all know v-belts are to long. I think the go kart belt measures only 24" or 21" long?? Any help with belt info would be great! I get the coil today and im excited to fire this thing up!

I installed the new magneto coil. I even installed the new ground wire it come with back side and put the other wire on the tab when you switch the engine to off. IT WILL NOT START. I'm running out of ideas...

It has spark, brand new coil. I took the head cover off and it was pretty full of gas. I think its flooded. I also tried starter fluid and when i pull the crank u can see smoke coming from the exhaust. I also wanted to make sure the piston and valves were in good condition. Looks like this motor was running really rich.

I dumped all the old gas out. Refilled with new gas and it still will NOT start..

You DID replace the spark plug, right?
Also make sure there’s no corrosion on the coil standoff mounts, that can interfere with the circuit. Other than that, try unhooking the kill switch to make sure that’s not it.
And yeah WOW that’s a lot of carbon!

I have not replaced the spark plug. I did check the gap and its .30 witch is correct. I checked the cylinder wall and there are no scratches whatsoever so thats good. I did disconnect the kill switch. I also installed the engine ground to the block, connected the tab to the coil and put the other end to the off switch toggle. I dont know why it wont start doesn't make any sense the flywheel is on correctly with key, new coil, fresh gas, ground wire is hooked up, i also sanded down were the coil bolts to on the block.. spark plug is numbered 796112. Only thing i can think of is maybe the carbon build up is keeping it from firing and starting correctly??

Ohhh wait! Briggs coils are grounded through the standoffs! The only wire that should come from the coil needs to go to the kill switch! That ground wire is directly shorting it out! Also replace that plug to rule it out.

Is there a diagram out there someone can post. I understand what your saying. Coil to spark plug, backside of coil connect the tab and run that to the engine ground. Still wont start. I disconnected the kill switch. Im just trying to get this engine started. I even adjusted the idle screw and nothing! I also noticed there is nothing were the off and on selector is on the back side of the toggle. I wish someone could post some pictures to help out. It could possibly be the carburetor but when i try and crank the engine a couple pulls. I remove the spark plug and u can smell fuel on the end of the spark plug so its getting fuel.. getting spark.. compression is good flywheel is tuff to spin. Brand new coil.. im getting a little frustrated these engines aren't very hard to work on very minimal diagnostics

Hmmmm, spark yet no go. Just to check, you replaced the spark plug, right? Sometimes they can spark in the atmosphere but fail in the engine. Also make sure it’s not getting fouled out, it sounds like it.
To clarify the coil circuit: the standoffs complete the circuit which goes coil-spark plug- engine ground(block). Without the standoffs, there’s no circuit. The little tab on the back of the coil that sticks out? Again, that one wire goes to the kill switch. It can be unhooked entirely and the engine will run. But you should only have two wires coming out of the shroud: the plug wire and the kill wire. Although make sure there’s no OEM kill switch in the blower housing.
Also, have you done anything with the carburetor? Pulsa Jets can wear out. Standard procedure for an old Briggs is carb rebuild as well as thorough cleaning of the carb and gas tank. Also, try playing with the mixture screw, start at 1 1/2 turns from bottomed out IIRC.

OKAY so i got it fired up, I basically took the ground that came with the new coil and hooked one end to the engine block screw ground. connected it to the back of the coil tab and connected the other wire to the tab under the gas tank. Then there is a small wire that I connected from the tab also and bolted it to the engine screw ground. Poured some gas into the cylinder. Put the plug back in and connected the spark plug coil wire and pulled. Fired right up. I didn't even have to choke it, I had it on run switch wide open and i adjusted the screw some on the carb. It will stay running and does not die until I put the choke on and it will kill the engine. I cannot start it again without dumping gas into the cylinder and repeating the process over and over again. I will have to look up why I cant just pull start it without dumping gas into the cylinder. Any other ideas? At least it runs though!! I've had it running for the past 30 mins just to clean all the crap out of it and get things moving and lubed up. Here is a link to the video I uploaded check it out.

Whoawhoa, that sounds like a lot more wiring than necessary. Care to post up a pic or two?
Also, about the dumping gas into the cylinder..... did you do anything with the carb since you got the engine?

I did nothing with the carb because the fuel tank was really clean, no rust or bad odors. Also the carb has all new gaskets like someone put new gaskets on it and it just sat for a while. I let it run today for about 20 mins. The kill switch cable wasnt even hooked up right i was able to pull the cable and it just snapped off. The person before just electrical taped it.. I just ordered a brand new crab with gaskets this morning and i will get it friday. I dump some fuel into the cylinder and put the plug in, dont even have to choke it fires right up and runs until i decide to shut it off. I think there is something wrong with the carb on it. It must not be sending enough fuel to the engine. So that would make it run very lean. Explaining why the cylinder is full of black debris. A brand new carb should fit the issue. Pic posted of the ground wiring i have done.

UPDATE after running the engine for over an hour and adding fuel in the tank. The engine starts on the 1st or 2nd pull now and fires right up! I ordered a brand new carb for backup but im sure i got all the old crap out of the system and it runs like a top now!! Installing new throttle cable, throttle spring, TC belt tomorrow and i should be able to drive it around the block! Thanks everyone!
