Indeed!True. Modern machines are amazing. It doesn't take away the cool factor of those of those old machines. Back in the seventies I went from a solid frame mini bike to a Suzuki 50 > Yamaha DT 125 > Husky 125. Even then what a difference. But still fun to hop on a mini bike and cruiser around.
Something about a mini bike with a tractor tire on the back is real intriguing to me.
Just as a note the rear sprocket on theses old timers were #50 chain because of the gear reduction that these things had. The primary reduction chain were #40 or dual roller #35 as some Tote Gotes used. We replaced the old clutches with Comet 44 series clutches both drive and driven. I still have some of the 44 series pucks.I'm gonna have to round up some pipe and expanded metal and see what I can come up with. Not even going to try to find a sprocket like that. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.

Yes that is the one. I am buying a dual cone expansion chamber software program to use to build the expansion chamber for this engine so I will be making the tuned pipe for this engine in a month or two. I put quite a few of miles on the mini bike out in the desert last summer and fall testing it out and the engine pulls hard through the hills and the sand without any overheating or problems at all. I was using the original modified silencer that I had on the engine so I will expect to get even more grunt out of it when I am done. I am impressed with the power of that old Sachs engine it has a wide powerband.Is that the "2 stroke mini bike" you last did a build thread here on?
How did that turn out?

Thanks Randy, I am familiar with the two speeds on those old machines some of them had two different primary chain sprockets with different ratios that could be engaged by a sliding dog on the cross shaft which when the dog was engaged into the sprocket it would lock it to the shaft while the other sprocket would freewheel on the shaft. Some of them had a hex shaped middle cross shaft which the shifting dog slid on and the outer edge of the dog was splined and it would engage into the splines of the sprockets which also had brass bushings in them to freewheel on the cross shaft when the sprocket was not engaged to the dog. The cross shaft was hexed in the middle and round from the middle outward and in the hexed section there were detent balls with springs which when the dog was slid int the selected sprocket the spring loaded balls would detent into a groove inside the shifting dog and hold the dog engaged into the sprocket. They just took a section of hex shaft and turned the ends down on a lathe so that the ends of the shaft could be mounted in bearings and the shaft would have a section for the sprockets to freewheel on while not engaged into the dog. I might have some examples laying around somewhere to take a picture of so that it might be easier to understand what I mean. We did away with our two speeds as per rules that we made because some of the two speed models would have a lot more top speed in the open sections and it became unfair in some of the other racers opinions so we selected one gear ratio and that was it but the Comet 44 series clutches gave us a wider gearing range than some of those old clutch systems that were on those old machines. I would use the Suzuki sled engine that's a no brainer most certainly if you have the sleds primary and secondary clutches. Those Suzuki engines are ten times the engine of any Chinese made utility engine and with more power and quality just the way they are stock then any of those engines period. They are made to move a sled in snow not run a cement mixer.That's awesome. Thanks for the linkage Chancer. Congrats too.

The 275 Suzuki engine is a "free air" engine which would work on on your machine if you so desire to use it. I can give you information about some inexpensive fans that will help cool the cylinders on that engine at low speeds while crawling around. Do you have the primary and secondary clutches for the sled that the engine came from?I inherited a Suzuki 275 twin. It's been mummified for over 10 years. Stock exhaust and intake, lot's of room for improvement. Is it Bearkat worthy?
Desertduler even though I don't know you or your dear late friend Wade. I, for some reason have a connection to this Bearkat.
I picked up some 400-10 tractor tires weeks ago, not quite 670-15's. I think that was the original tire size. But still intimidating. Maybe I'll run duallies.

I understand the cool factor with the Bearkat with the large chevron tread tractor tire in the rear but let me give you some food for thought from first hand experience using the chevron tread tractor tire. I have owned two different Rokons which had the chevron tractor tread tires on them and I have used that type of tire on the rear end of those old trail scooters and the tires work fine while in full contact with the ground but get them on a side hill that is slick with snow or mud or wet or take a corner hard in the mud or snow and you wind up picking yourself off the ground because when half of the tire is in contact with the ground the tread pattern becomes a helix which will "screw" right out from underneath you. The tire is better off on a tractor or rototiller in my opinion. I have had some luck grooving the lugs with a tire grooving iron but even when the grooves would fill up with mud you would be all over the place or on the ground. The best all around tire that I found to use on these old machines were the Carlisle Snow Hogs they worked the best out of everything we tried but they do not make a large one like you desire. Another thing that is somewhat of a drawback using the large rear wheel was that the large tire and wheel has a lot of kinetic energy when in rotation which is harder to accelerate and brake. Most of these old machines had a band brake on the third drive cross shaft that drove the rear wheel via chain so if the rear chain broke or came off you were better off laying the machine down or jump off if you did not have a brake on the front wheel.
We were racing these things not putting around so this may not be a problem to you. Wade was a small guy with talent and a big set of ballz he made that Bearkat work!
on the other hand, diabetes is taking a toll. I want my boys to say "my dad was one crazy sob". Well they already say that. But, you know what I mean. I want to leave them something solid. They can have my go karts mini bikes, and tools. Somehow I'm taking my trucks with me, or I'm not going.Yes they do, just add a rectifier/regulator and a small 12 volt battery and a switch and wiring and that's it. When you get to that part I can show you a real simple rectifier/regulator that will work. These fans can be spaced apart to line up with the centers of your cylinders and heads you will not need any duct work trust me. The rectifier/regulator wires in to the two AC wires from the lighting coils and the voltage is converted out of the rectifier/regulator to DC regulated voltage 13.8-14.7 VDC.I can handle that. I was kind of expecting some elaborate duct work.
Almost 7 amps. They must have a fairly stout charging system.
I am very well versed with Mikuni carburetors. Not a big deal at all.Another simple mod, cool.
I'm still in hibernation up here in Michigan. Been gathering parts and info from all over. Have a 440 Predator project, just picked up a Briggs Vanguard 18hp, two Predator 212's, an ebay el cheapo 301 Predator on the way, and the Suzuki. I've had the Suzuki a long time wasn't sure about cooling and stuff. Now I wish I would've used it a while ago.
I wondered about jetting as well. Not a big deal, it's got an old Mikuni.
I've seen complete 340's on eBay for $300. Went searching for Sachs. A bit more, probably worth it.
