I am so glad i have not seen ads for any chinese made cars...

Over here in Australia and New Zealand their selling Chinese made utes and SUVs under the name "Great Wall". One of the utes(that's a pick up to you Americans) looks like a 15 year old Nissan Navara, the other is just plain wierd. The SUV that they sell looks okay and is dead cheap (around $23000, soft roaders over here start at around $35000), has a 4 star safety rating, the utes are meant to be okay but have a few NVH issues. Haven't heard anything about the SUV yet.

Apparently their selling quite well, companies are buying tons of them. Over here companies buy tones of new cars coz its its subsidised and they sell them off after a couple years, usually once the warranty runs out.

Oh and the Great Wall ads are soooo crap, almost as bad as the rivers ones :roflol:.

Thanks

10 years ago Toyota was THE sh*t. Family was a Toyota-holic, everything from a 89' Celica, to a 87' Camry, to a 91' Previa, to a 00' Camry, to a *barf* 2010 Prius (But hay, 45MPG with four people :D)

Seriously though, 10 years ago Toyota was absolutely terrific, IMO. My dad killed his 87' Camry (265,000 miles, ONE set of spark plugs, ONE timing belt, nothing else was replaced), by going to work with nothing on the dipstick.

Started to knock, then decided to call home. Brought him some oil, went away. Goes to work, a couple miles later, throws the rod outright. Calls AAA, and gets promised a tow. Half an hour later, dad gives up and drives that other 50 miles home on 3 cylinders.

THAT'S reliability.

Wtf? American cars have downfalls too o_O

Let's see...

In 2009 GM recalled 1.4 million Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac vehicles for a engine-related (oil leak-prone) fire.

In 2010 GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for a power-steering failure-related issue.

In 2010, GM ALSO recalled another 1.5 million vehicles for a windshield-wiper related issue that could catch the vehicle on fire (WTF?)

Toyota has problems of its own, but don't get strung up on just Toyota, every manufacturer has problems of their own.

Coming from a company that went bankrupt recently... At least they honored there problems and didnt denye it... *COUGH COUGH TOYOTA COUGH COUGH

The 10 years ago statement for Japan is invalid. I'd go as far as saying the mid to late 80's marked the turn in Japanese products starting a trend of quality which offset their economy to being remarkably strong in the mid 90's. I can look back to the mid 90's when I was considering portable CD players and remembering that anything but a Sony was likely trash.

If you want to mark a time where China will match Japan for quality we need to wait a good 10 years now. At that time however they will have to decrease production to match prices in products and labor and raise prices subsequently to match these increases negating a mark in domination of the market. I am very disappointed in their lowered standards, this marks a clear legacy of disposable marketing. The public is buying based not solely on price but also on longevity. In order for the Chinese to make a mark given their current product they would be required to price cars in the area of 5-7k dollars for a new car, closer to 8 or 10 would be too close to even a stock Chevy or Honda which would crush one of these Chinese cars.

I've never been in an American GM car that was decent(or even acceptable) quality. Well not one made in the last 30-40 years anyway.

GM are constantly recalling stuff, I'd be willing to bet they recall more than any other car company.

Toyota's on the other hand..... Apart from the Prius they've all been pretty good. The Prius was shocking, the plastics were the definition of tacky, the seats were the definition of crap, fuel economy isn't far off what my 1957 Peugeot 403 gets (with twin carbs and all). I wasn't impressed to say the least....

Well my dad bought it for the mileage, and by god it can go far. ~500 miles on it's little 10 gallon tank.

54-55MPG by himself, and 45MPG from a 4-person family trip and some extra luggage.

He does admit, the pickup is absolutely CRAP.

You know that little "boggggggggg" you get from a cent. driven single speed vehicle when you're underpowered?

The Prius does that in FIRST gear when you floor it. :ack2:

.....but the mileage is nice :)
