Loud instantanious grinding sound

hey there. I am new to the forums here. :surrender:


I bought a Birel Torsion cart a few days ago, with a 15HP Briggs racing motor on it.

It runs great, but when I get rolling, say 15kmp/h or so.... up to 25 or so, the cart gets 'jerky' like it pulsates...

The chain and spockets are lined up to a tee, and I tried running the chain semi loose/ really loose/ and tight... to no avail.

Also if I push the gas to go faster, I hear a really loud screetching/grinding sound for about 2 seconds... then if i speed up again, it happens again..

Of course it scares the crap out of you because the clutch is right beside you.

I was wondering if something in the clutch was broken, but it appears to be fully intact inside. You can see what kind of clutch it has from the picture sort off... I'm not to sure how to tell what kind it is... (it isnt like a standard centrifugal im used to)


Any help as to what kind of clutch im running, and possible fixes for this problem would be great. I cannot even ride the cart as is....

Hmm, I took it out on the road and when it started to pulsate, I just sped up, and then the cart worked fine. It would only do that vibrating thing at a slower speed.

I stopped then took it out about 10 minutes later, and it did that stupid grinding noise again, and when I would try to get on the gas to stop it, it would sputter and almost stall...

Sounds like the grinding is just a slipping clutch, but as far as the enging stalling, try cleaning your carb really good, and maybe the airfilter too.

mine did this, spray wd40 on the shaft area being careful not to spray it in the clutch bell and problem solved. I thought my engine was trashed but it was just un oiled clutch bearings

If its a pull start, the screeching/grinding noise is the wratchet sticking because the bearings are gunked up. to fix that take the pull starter off, open the wratchet(careful not to lose the ball bearings), hose it down with carb and choke cleaner till its good, put a little oil on the end of your finger and put a real light coat in the wratchet then put it back together.

the "pulsating" or vibrating at lower speeds is either a problem with the front end alinement, the wheel bearings need a few squirts of grease, or the back axel isnt parrelle to the front axel setup.
