What we have here, is a failure to communicate!

What I meant (and thought YOU meant) was motorcycle brakes! I think that's what Tony thought too. So-

No, I would never condone or endorse bicycle brakes on a go kart. Sorry for the confusion.

No no :c I meant bicycle brakes :lolgoku: I think I'll still test it out on my kart, just to see if they work due to it being a small motor and I'll only have it going no more than 35km/h. It's worth a test imo since I'm still new. Live and learn right? Even so, I know what you guys recommend is good advice because you're all so experienced. I want to experiment with what I have. The bike is going to be taken apart for scraps anyways.

OH HELL NO!

Chris is correct, I thought you meant MOTORbike brakes!

Are they hydraulic or mechanical? Even so, as I stated previously,
it doesn't come down to engine size, it's all about weight.

Go ahead & test them, if you must but, have a backup plan in place

Designs DL'ed, dimensions look good

Mechanical, but I still want to try it just for experimenting purposes; Don't knock it till you try it. If all goes wrong I'll just go on eBay and buy some hydraulic brakes. At least the dimensions look good. I don't want to start over again :wai:

Edit: I'm having some problems with where I wan the steering wheel's shaft to go. If you look at this picture of what my design is based off of, the diagonal metal in front of the seat is on, what, around a 50 degree angle, maybe. I can't really tell but I know it's roughly 4 inches horozontal from its connection bar and maybe around 6 inches vertucal from the connection bar. I mean, the design is practically complete, I just need those two vertical bars. Plus, I LOST MY MOUSE  so I can't work on it without it being a pain in my gluteus maximus. Next update probably won't show up for another day or two.

In the case of that particular kart, the angle & length of the rear steering shaft support is directly proportional to the angle of the steering shaft itself.

What does that mean? The steering shaft runs through a bush at the top of the support at a 90* angle. Short of using some pretty complex math, the easiest way to solve this problem is to leave the length of the support long, build the frame to the point that the seat can be mounted, then sit in the seat & position the steering shaft/wheel where it's comfortable & get someone to mark it where it meets the frame.

EDIT:  Forgot about the brakes. You're right, there's no harm in trying, until it doesn't work; all I'm saying is be careful, don't go flat out on the first test, build up to it...

The brakes could work.... I would use 2 of them mounted to the rear axle though instead of just one... The oic is the quad I'm gonna cut up as a donor to build a kart like the one your designing. .... disc brakes front and rear....

I'll be using two disk brakes not just one, so that'll add to stopping power. I will be careful though, no worries. Thanks for that info about the angles, I'll think about it more and try to figure something out.

Wanna compare karts in the long run? :cheers2:

oOooh, I know he didn't. .... whatha? Me thinks me feels the sting of a gauntlet that has smacked me in the face..... :ack2: I accept, dear Sir! :lolgoku:Mine will be altered slightly as it will be for my daughter. I rough-timate the overall length is going to be 40" and width about 24" . Wheelbase is approximately 32"...... All this is approximated and will be finalized when I get some measurements of my daughter. I started laying out the frame on the floor at work. I cut the majority of the material, long, and will start taking quad apart tomorrow while at work. This will hit 35-40 mph with no problem. The quad pulled me @30+ rapped out. Im 5x my daughters weight. And yes,it will governed till she gets used to it. I might add a cage of some type. Its all open ground here where we ride, but you never know. And I have a seat belt for it too.... :cheers2:

I've decided to just make this a frame that does not include the steering, just the knuckles. I have not updated the plans since, but it's basically done once I calculate the angles and do the measurements. The plans will be free and will have a step-by-step instruction book. I'm going to estimate it'll be roughly 7 pages, or less.
