Hi! I am currently looking forward to making a kart with a friend during summer break so we could have some fun.We saved up money for a long time so I was thinking we could blow a lot of that on the engine. So the big question now is what engines should we get? We would like to have manual transmission if possible and ive looked into bike engines but couldnt find a bike under 1000€ with a working engine. Also the power im looking for is about 500cc because I am pretty heavy (78kg) and I want a bit of speed.

Also I read somewhere that a gokart with more than 20hp might be unenjoyable is that true?

Where in the world are you located? That will play a big part in where to get parts. We are mostly a group in USA with European and Australian friends and one guy in China. With a few visitors from North Africa.

I don’t know of anyone who might know in Romania. But you’re welcome to hang out with us and maybe learn a thing or two. Or just joke with us! :lolgoku:
Thanks for the warm welcome😃 Ill surely stick around and also post my progress. But just for more info I can probably get most parts that you name so just name an ok first engine.

I have to suggest a semiautomatic (auto clutch/manual shift) or full manual Lifan 200cc

I'd recommend checking out the Predator 212cc. It's reliable, budget-friendly, and perfect for DIY projects. Many enthusiasts swear by it for its balance of power and affordability. Also consider using Competitor Price Tracking & Monitoring software by Priceva. It offers automated tracking and price change notifications, so you won't miss a good deal.

If you want a shifter look for a wrecked china quad. Could probably find one cheap. There is a bit more to putting a shifter engine on a kart than using an industrial engine like the predator. Not sure what brands are available for you but I'm sure you have rototillers, pressure washers and generators too. Same kind of engine.

For a go-kart build, I'd actually recommend checking out used motorcycle engines from bikes like the Honda CBR500 or Kawasaki Ninja 400 - they're pretty common and you might find salvage/non-running bikes cheap where you can pull a good engine. The sequential transmissions on these work great for karts and they've got plenty of power for your weight. Another solid option is looking at snowmobile engines or even small car engines like from a Smart car, though those might be harder to mount. Whatever you go with, just make sure you plan out your chain drive or belt system early because that'll affect your whole frame design!
I couldn't agree with you more!
