On my axle I have keyways on either side of the bearings. The keys are ground to the right length so that the axle can't possibly move. The keysteel butts up against the bearings, and at the other end against the end of the keyway.
The brake disc and sprocket carriers go on top of the keyways to stop them coming out.

You could get spacers made that slide over your axle and press against the bearings and wheels/sprocket.

Hmm that is a good point, something I hadn't thought of. Thanks.
My thinking was on the outside of each bearing having a bolt through the axle that butted up against the bearings.

Racing bearings have a collar that slips over and there are 2 set screws to tighten down to your axle. Modelengineer is right too.

Yea our bearings have a collar on them with two allan key scresw that tighten onto the axle. I'm just assuming that even if they are really tight it could slip a little putting the chain out ever so slightly.

Well maybe I can do the key method with disc brake and just leave the other side that and the bearing screws should be enough to hold it. :) cheers for replys guys.

All last summer my axle and hubs where help on by 1, 1/4" setscrew and had no probelems. But this time I'm drilling a hole in the end of my axle and tapping it and I bought some 1" ID mechanical tubing to slide over my axle.
