A 420cc Predator weighs in at around 85 lbs. It's advertised as a 13hp engine, but people say they are actually closer to 15 or 16. An air filter and header and rejet should get you a little more. With luck...you'll still be able to use a knock-off 40 series TC.

Remove the govenor and you'll never run WOT without soiled drawers! I seriously doubt you want or need 20 hp anyway! Your pockets aren't deep enough to mod out a smaller engine. And regardless, not accounting for weight, you'll have to beef up the frame to handle the torque.

But by the same token...a modified 212 Predator will push that kart faster than the steering can handle.

You never did answer WHY you think you need 20hp anyway. To be brutally honest, without a valid reason, the only one left is misinformation or plain stupidity!!!

There have been members here that have hit 55-60 mph with the 212 on a similar kart....

Ok, thanks for the advice. I was thinking about it and modding out a smaller engine would save weight. I'm what some people refer to as a gearhead and love the idea of tuning and modding cars. I would love to be putting turbos or superchargers, engine tunes, ect on my vehicles, but that uses a lot of money, so I figured I would just use my go kart for the thing to tinker with and add mods and upgrades to. The reason for 20 hp is that I just thought I would go with something much higher than I would ever need, so I wouldn't want to upgrade the motor later.

So...if get a 212 Preadator and remove the governor and plop it on with a $20 clutch....take it out and give her a rip...you're gonna find out that's like driving a Vette on steroids....

Now....quit lying! A guy with a 10 second quarter mile car may be either thrilled to death or scared to it....but over time....the urge to go faster sets in.....and at that level....it's REAL expensive to upgrade to take off a second! You know you're gonna want to upgrade sooner or later...so why not start cheap, enjoy the thrill of that white knuckle ride over and over....and slowly and safely move up the ladder?

20hp

I know 20 hp is to much. I am from rural Illinois. Is there some sort of lightweight tranny that could hold 20 hp and would also fit on a go kart? I don't mind paying a little extra for a more expensive clutch. Also, does anyone have advise on a live axle setup?

if you dont use the 20hp one let me know id be intersted in it.

Found a guy in my area that builds racing carts. I'll see if he can give me advise on the live axle setup. Does anyone have a suggestion for a 6 to 10 hp lightweight motor that revs rather high? Maybe a small crotch rocket motor?

I have not purchased a 20hp motor yet I was just considering it.

No wanting to keep on buying new motors and I'm also wanting to be able to do two wheel rolling burnouts, plus have something that is a real challenge to launch.

I know of a 6.5 HP engine that put out 10 HP and like 5400 RPM for like $200 total after some basic mods.

and can use this as a transmission

with something like this on the axle if you go with the #41 10T TC sprocket

or like this if you go with the #35 12T TC sprocket

Get 13" tires good launch (max speed 35 mph but ~240lbs of force to get you going).

Probably no rolling burn outs tho.
