Where can I find the various clevis and cable ends for setting up brake and throttle linkages? Also, it seems that throttle setup is easier on the Tecumseh OHV engine than the BS engine. Is there a way to set up the throttle on the BS that is easy? Seems that the factory linkage is really designed for tillers and such where a slide control is used, rather than an active linkage.

Any kart shop, or just about anywhere for your first question. Fun karts by nature use sort of rudimentary off-the-hardware-store-shelf items. I have a set of Briggs Raptor throttle kits (may or may not be rudimentary) that have a lot of useful parts in them, bought off fleabay.

We have a parts supplier thread in the FAQ that should be mostly up to date.

I have no experience with the Tecumseh OHV but all these stationary industrial engines use a “Rube Goldberg” contraption, I mean governor linkage that’s pretty complex. There’s no direct linkage to the carb on the vast majority of these engines like you said. The governor is a rev maintainer so that’s paramount on a tiller. Lots of people keep the governor intact….

Ill add that its pointless to remove it unless you plan on upgrading parts and making it faster. The stock engine works much better WITH it.

-And like Helion always mentions, you can adjust them. You can almost get another 1000rpm on top of the stock 3600. So again, even more pointless.

You mean a Briggs and Stratton 5 HP flathead? Please be more specific and feel free to bore us with excruciating, nauseating detail or show me some photos? I'd rather communicate with photos, caveman paintings, etc. to be honest.

For me, BS is 🐂:poop: ...it's just the first thing that comes to mind. :cornut:

Try OMB Warehouse or MFG Supply. The latter has a flat rate shipping charge for most items.

Is it an early version with the adjustable-jet Pulsa-Jet carb or the later fixed-jet version?

The Briggs Raptor throttle kit was designed for the early adjustable-jet carburetors (and the later ones modded for racing) but it can be adapted to the later fixed-jet carbs. The fixed jet carbs are most easily identified by the rotary choke and the air cleaner that looks like a Big Mac 🍔 box.




Otherwise, use the factory governed throttle under the fuel tank. 👇 This is the kit used on most factory karts and minibikes.

I've never kept the gov on an engine. In a totally unscientific way, I'd add an extra spring to the valve and let 'er rip. Have no idea how much RPM I was turning. And the two engines I now have are pieced together and not strictly of any particular model. One has a damaged carb mounting flange and will have to have a replacement carb. Like I said, previously, I made a home made intake and mounted a Honda motorcycle carb on a Briggs and used a leaf blower fuel tank mounted on a fabbed bracket held in place by the head bolts, gravity feeding the carb. It ran pretty fat so I soldered the main jet and drilled it out. Again, all totally unscientific.

Or you can attach a throttle cable from the rear of the Pulsa Jet carb, connect it directly to the butterfly. There’s a circular groove cast into the carb body, as if to hold throttle cable there. It was used for a stationary throttle, like the set-it-and-leave-it kind seen on a garden tiller.

This is an adaptation but whew, I don't like that compression spring on there. Too much coil bind.



I made a home made intake and mounted a Honda motorcycle carb on a Briggs

Many such cases and many people have done it. I prefer the factory setup with tank mounted carb just for the compactness and economy of space *in most cases*.

For my throttle, I use a bicycle derailleur cable and secure it with a 3/16 x 1/8" npt ferule fitting screwed into a 1/8" npt coupling welded to the frame.

Nice and clean. What does it look like at the pedal, an eyelet on the end of the cable?

I use the ball end at the carb. On the pedal end, I grind two flats (about an 1/8") opposite each other and immediately beneath the head of a 5/16 bolt and then I drill an approximately .100" hole through the bolt. I thread the cable wire through the hole, add a flat washer and then a nut to clamp the cable against the head of the bolt. I use the remaining approximately half inch of the bolt to pass through the pedal and use a nylock nut to fasten it. I tighten it just enough to let it pivot.
