Can I substitute paint thinner for kerosene?
Yes, but kerosene is better. Do you have a Home Depot or Lowes nearby? They carry kerosene as do some gas stations. Fuel oil, mineral spirits, Coleman Fuel (white gas) or diesel is ok too.
Hold off on Loctite #515 for cylinder head. Mine appears to be leaking after several hours of operation but do use it for sealing of crankcase as described in service manual.
I will continue to test for a better head sealant. Someone suggested Loctite #518. I just ordered some and will let you know what happens.

Yes there's a Lowes here. I tried searching their site but didn't see anything about kerosene. I'll go take a look anyway though because I was gonna try to get the loctite there. They seem to have quite a selection. I do have a full thing of paint thinner though. I received the glass packs today.

Probably don't list it online. Found this to be true for Home Depot. Had it in store in paint section in quart and gallon sizes.
Am continuing search for head sealant and found something very promising:

Also, tried a bigger carb. Walbro WGA-10-1. It's one I used on model 'F' with ho-hum results. Seems to be better suited to larger cc's of DuraForce. Continuing to test.

Me thinks regular silicone wont take thousands of psi and 400* for long.

Well you see kenny If your head temp is 400 SHUT IT DOWN IMEDIATlLY and no engine has over 1000 psi of compression and plus this is what this silicone is ment to do, our engine builder that has been building engines for over 20 years uses it There's a couple versions of it That permatex sells. But its all called black silicone. Its worth a try.

I don't think the RTV with work in this area. I f you want to try, the red or copper color high heat would be a better choice.

You can also try K & W copper coat sealer.

This comes in brush on and an aerosol. I've used it with great success on shim type head gaskets in automotive applications. Not sure about running without a gasket. You could always make one out of thin copper .010" then spray both sides with the copper coat.

You gotta remember the explosion in there(thats just my crap guess with some rough numbers used in high pressure combustion spudguns) 400* is the upper limit running meth on a racing cart. It might work on a head but I dont think it will, have a case or so of mopar black silicone need to read one of the tubes.

I have a tube of that stuff! It says in the back instructions not to use it on heads though or any area that comes in contact with gasoline.

I went to Lowes today and I did find the kerosene, thanks Russ! They didn't have the 515 though :(. I went to a car store the other day and they had a bunch of Permatex items, they had so many though and I didn't have much time so I didn't look to see if any of them would be applicable to the LB. I may take a look this weekend and see if they have anything that may work. I'll let you know what I find.

There are a couple of black sealants that Mr. Tyler may be referring to. Technical Data Sheet for Permatex Ultra Black Gasket Maker says:
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
• Oil pans
• Transmission pans
• Valve covers
• Valves and guides
• Timing gear covers
• Differential covers
Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant Technical Data Sheet:
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
• Solid gasket dressing
• Close fitting machined surfaces
• Threaded connections
• Aviation engines
• Marine engines
Permatex Super “300” Form-A-Gasket Technical Data Sheet:
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
• Compressors
• Diesel engine heads
• Final drives
• Gear boxes
• Power units
• Pumps Transmissions
• High speed turbine Superchargers
The first one is unacceptable as these are low/no pressure applications. 2nd one looks better but 3rd appears to be best bet as it actually mentions Diesel engine heads (high pressure and heat).
Thoughts, Mr. Kibble?

yes thats what I was refuring too. Yes the 3 one is your best bet. If it can work on a diesel engine head then it can DEFINATLY work on small 2 cycle head.

Me thinks that looks to be appropriate! I'll go to the store tomorrow and look for that stuff.
