Also, did we find out for sure if 1) the Noram Star can be mounted inboard or outboard

I'm still convinced it'll work fine either way, but I've just emailed Noram asking if the Star model was specificly designed for both inboard and outboard operation. I also asked for any dimension and performance specifications avalible. I'll post their reply as soon as I hear back.

Thanks AK. I appreciate it. Did you drill/tap your crank or was it already?

I contacted Noram asking if the Star clutch could be used both Inboard or outboard, but never got a reply. (nice) So I went with plan B and contacted the online kart parts store I bought my Star clutch from. Darwin Moore (owner of the Kart Parts Store) sent me the following reply today:

I'm sorry I have been so busy the last couple weeks I'm having a hard time getting anything done. The star clutch was made special for the Tecumseh Star engine.(but can be used on other engines) The clutchs are mounted inboard on those engines. Any Noram Clutch that is 1" all the way through can go inboard or outboard. There are some like the Noram Enforce clutch that can't because they are not 1" all the way through, there for it can only be mounted outboard on a 1' shaft. Also my order book says can be mounted in or out board.. Thanks Darwin http://www.kartpartsstore.net/servlet/StoreFront

Subject: Noram Star clutch info ?

Hey Darwin,

I've bought (and am still very happily racing) a Noram Star clutch, plus an extra 13 tooth drum from you. I'm trying to dig up any Noram specifications or documentation on this clutch model. Noram's web site doesnt even seem to mention this particular model and theres an amazing lack of info posted anywhere else on the net.

I've recommended this clutch to someone on an online go kart forum that needs to run a #35 / 1" bore, inboard-installation, and also wants several gearing options available. (as far as I know, this is the only clutch sold in its price range that can do all this) He just wont believe this model will indeed mount and correctly function inboard. I'm absolutely convinced it will, but need any sort of documentation you might be able to provide to help prove my point here.

If no Noram documentation exists, an email from you confirming the Star does indeed work fine mounted inboard would help a bunch. With your permission, I'll be posting your reply on the thread.

ps:
I already tried emailing Noram for any Star clutch info and never got a reply...

Thanks
Anderkart

Awesome! Thanks Russ! What makes the 334B compatible? Looks like it's designed for engines up to 100cc...you think that's enough for the L-B's?

Thanks Anderkart! Good news! Glad to hear the Star could work and the HD can be mounted either way.

I got one of the motors off the deck today. Question...It looks like the crank comes out of the case pretty easy. Whats preventing me from just pulling out the crank and having it turned down to 3/4" and have a keyway milled in it? Is that pretty $$? I have a friend that's a machinist, but he probably couldn't do it if it took a ton of time.

BTW-the shaft is definately not a full 1" dia. Just shy of 1". How do you deal with the difference?

Hey Russ, do the commercial Duraforce engines have a metal flywheel shroud or the same plastic shroud as my residential versions?

Dimensions of this carb (venturi) are pretty closely matched to that of the 239b. By no means is this guaranteed to work...but if I was looking for a carb, this would be the one. The 100cc rating is for high performance 2 cycles, which the Lawn-boy is not. Better to go a little smaller than anything too large.

Difference is 2 teeth less. Not worth the $40+ difference in price IMO. Ratio is easily changed with a driven sprocket change. The Noram 17 tooth works very well for me.

Nothing, but I do not recommend it. My machine shop wanted $250 just to cut a keyway. I did it (Thanx to Mr. Kibble) for the cost of a couple of reinforced cutoff wheels and and an abrasive stone (see attached).

PTO is 0.984375" or 63/64". I used .007 stainless shim stock to make up the difference.

All plastic. Differences between Duraforces are cosmetic only.
Possible that the shroud on L-B snow engines will fit and are metal. I have 2 of them, but never actually checked them for fit.

Very good point.

Hey, are your 1600 series Norams a 2 or 3 shoe design? The Star's a 3-shoe and I was just kinda wondering if they might share some of the same guts. I saw the 1600 series are rated up to 20hp and I'm curently trying to find out the max recommended rating of the Star.
