Yeah, can't wait to see how they work on a kart. I've ridden atvs with them and enjoyed it. I have a 97 tj that had a fuel injected chevrolet small block for a while, now it doesn't have anything and is awaiting attention. I aim to pick up that project after I get out of school with a real job in May.

I had a 46 CJ2A too, after a few years and serveral broken rear axles I ended up swapping it off for a sand rail. Dude called me back a week later and said the old flatty 4 banger had threw a rod. (guess I timed that swap out about right... ;)

**** its hard to break an axle with the flatty usually i blow a driveshaft before anything else breaks. Not hard to throw a rod they dont rev much with such a long stroke.

From scratch trail beater for behind the house. Just like any other go kart just little bigger tires than most. Should be selling this 2.5 ton this weekend so the kart project should start moving a little faster.

Removed the wood chipper pulley from the engine tonight. As expected, the CVT fits great.

The UPS man should be making a bunch of stops at my house this week. I bought some suzuki quad calipers and master cylinder off of ebay that I'm going to use for brakes. My plan is to run front brakes only. I nailed down the gear ratio and bought some sprockets (15t and 36t) and #40 chain. The gearbox has 96 and 28 toothed gears and the CVT starts off (i think) around 3.7 which yields in the neighborhood of 32:1 maximum reduction. With a 4900rpm red line and CVT at 1:1 the theoretical top speed is ~42mph. Before I finalize the rear, I need to figure out how wide to make it. I think I want a two seater with a seat in the 30"-34" wide range. I found some 36" long 1" dia keyed shaft for 44 bucks +ship that looks promising.

Bunch of stuff came in.

Suzuki front calipers from ebay.

From top left going clockwise: tapered roller bearings for front spindles, 15 & 36 tooth sprockets, 10ft of #40 chain, ball bearings for gear box, pillow blocks for rear axle. Got this stuff from bigbearingstore.com; way cheaper than everyone else and unfortunately, it's all from china.

Die for JD2 bender; 3/4" sch40 (1.05 OD) 3" bend radius. Using this for the frame.

New gears for gearbox. 96 & 28 tooth gears 16dp 20 deg contact angle

Still need to nail down rear axle width and get a bunch of material.

Just got the rear tires mounted. The right tire has 25psi (tire people did it) vs the left with ~3psi (what I plan to run on the kart).

I've been working on rebuilding the gearbox and making hubs but only a few hours a week. I should have something worth posting soon.

Holy cow this thread isn't dead. Back to the top with some recent work.

Some parts from McMaster Carr Kitty:
4340 3/4" shaft, circlips, 1/16" o-ring stock, 1/4" and 3/16" key stock for the gearbox. 3/4"-10 castellated nuts for the spindles and washers for the rear hubs.

Front and rear hubs tacked up ready for welding.

Front and rear hubs welded solid cooling off as I type.

New bearings in the gear box. The gears have been cut to size and broached for 1/4" key stock. I need to cut the new 4340 shaft material to size, cut grooves for circlips and mill slots for various pieces of key stock.

looks awesome dude, BTW I almost peed when I saw the pic of the tires leaning up against the engine. You should photoshop the cat into that one too sitting on the engine for kicks.

Been a long time and haven't touched the kart. I've graduated from school, gotten a real job and purchased a house. Good news: I have a big workshop. Bad news: I don't have access to a mill and lathe anymore. I wanted to bring this post back to the top since I plan to start working on it as soon as I get the shop put together.

Most of the kart as of tonight.

The rest is in a box...somewhere.
