Update

Racing weekend coming up so a little bit at a time, I'm doing things in the back for a bit.

Semi: Some wheel changing, cutting, lining things up... and mock up tanks. This will look pretty good when done.

Then, the Urban Defiance remake has had me a bit on the fence on wheels, but I found what I'm gonna use... her original Manco's... problem is, in the process of all this, I gave away some... Anyone got 3 Manco 5" front wheel halves? Any condition will so as long as they're not chipped.

Then there's christine, right wheels... yep.

That's about it for now.

3 in the works, 2 on the bench for a bit... more soon.

Update:

After a weekend at the track, then at the local insta-care... then a cast... fractured hand.

My Daughter got in a pretty good tangle up... and hit the wall at 45, head on.

Luckily, she got up and walked away from it within 5 seconds... then sat down on the ground holding her arm. So on the sidelines I sat waiting.

She's fine but a bit sore. I figured it would happen sooner or later but she's a trooper... and trust me, a 600 dollar helmet is well worth it... or her face would have been much worse.

The medics checked her out, she was fine, just a hurt hand. She wanted to stay & support her friends so I left it up to her when to go.

Nerve racking to say the least.

But, she's ok and and that's all that matters. The kart... well, it's frame is totaled. Frame is bent up at the back, waist and in the front and sideways 4"... it rocks nicely on the ground though... time for a different ride for her.

We stayed the day and helped out with others and all is fine.

When it all calmed down and this morning hit, I put everything away and decided to just get artistic and put the final, finishing touches on Sarge.

Up here, an addition to the rear light, a cover made from something patented in 1925 (a trashed spotlight), then another compartment on the back seat for storing stuff, fix up the light front end so it's clean looking... a new antenna... and a nifty vintage match holder up front.

I think I'll call Sarge... Done.

Yep, smacking your face off the pavement at high speed looks like a great way to have a really bad day. I can't even imagine taking a big bug to the face without a full face helmet, much less something like a rock. Glad everyone's okay.

Side note, I love the blue discoloration on the clutch!

Update:

It's on the last lap, about 10:39 in the video.

So...

After work & dinner, time for the bitter work of making the little body pieces fit around the steering system and frame of Sarge II. (ahem...ziviler Ungehorsam.. I'll never pronounce it right, I promise.)

I hate cutting these things up but it's gotta be done. Luckily, I have an eye for this sort of back yard engineering. Really! I'm in the back yard while lightning flashes in the distance. It's fun!

A piece of tape holds the back piece on, others just sitting there, trim the seat back down a bit... and, well. It's gonna be an odd looking one but that's the plan. A strange, tan, military counterpart to Sarge.

Next on this one:
1. Fab up the front clip, cut the holes, extend it to fit the steering hoop, mounts, and the one headlight with it's cover... then some trim after researching German military fixtures from the 50's.
2. Create a mount for the rear piece.
3. Weld up a few things & clean up old frame structures. (this one's been through a lot... after all, it was the first one I did. If I counted... this is probably revision #7 or so of this frame alone.)

Looks like h___ right now... but just wait.

otherwise she could have taken #3 a lot earlier and that hadn't happened

but as soon as there's some rubber on the rims I think it'll be more obvious though

And yes, it may seem like she's missing something, and she is... it's that she's going in hot enough to catch them but then has nowhere to go, thus tapping the brake... and ruins the exit. In 4 cycle racing, momentum is everything.

Update:

A night of organizing and doing little things.

First up, just enough parts for the beginnings of another rolling stand. Seeing I'm going to build a little garage for all of them, another stand will be needed.

Then, just pics of the other "sorting" of parts and what wheels go right with what, what axle, etc. It's all just "make it up as I go" stuff, but.. it's a fun hobby.

Not pictured: The Baroness and Bonneville Spirit. Stay tuned on that.

All in all, there's 6 of them.

I won't say what's up next, or what I'll do next. I just take it where the day takes me.

Update: Christine.

I knew I'd have to do it... cut that body clip that is.

Reason: I can't fit my feet in it or to the side of it and have anything work at all.

In the end, it works out pretty well because I was always on the fence about using a pedal car body for one of these. It kind of defeated the purpose of building them in the first place. It had to be something I took.. and did stuff to.

Sitting just the cut off front end of a pedal car on a go kart is really simple... but it didn't quite work for me.

So...

Chop it down the middle, narrow it, trim it to fit... Sorry Dash... you gotta go. Luckily.. the steering hoop has one so we'll use that.

Cut the hoop more, chop it down, align... yea, that'll work. I fit in it, everything should work out here.

It's all in the mock up stages for now, cut, duck tape, clamp this here & there... cover parts in paint for a visual... you know the drill.

Then... I found it. The old shifter lever & knob from... you guessed it... the shed O'Mystery. She'll have a floor mounted mock shifter too. The boot will come from a brake system on a race kart.

You know what, that shifter reminds me of the "Bonanza bikes" we used to have in germany when I was roughly about this (*makes waist height gesture*) high...
somehow similar to your muscle krates in the US basically.. with a shift stick ...
know what we called that? "Nut cracker!"

And; how do I put it??
... your's -in case of an accident- looks likely to become a "heart breaker" for the very same reason...

So carefull bout it's position buddy.

Well, call me chicken,
but a sharp edged steel thorn pointing at your chest while driving a go kart ("protected" by a plastic ball or not) doesn't sound like the most brilliant idea of all times to me

but, looking again at pic 1 and 4...
That space behind the new backrest would make a perfectly nice little fake trunk..
either as a compartement for tools ... or -if possible- the fuel tank.
I know a fake trunklid in front of the engine might be an awkward thing to have, but it might work *shrugs*

The stick will be much shorter and just a show piece really. There's no way I'll slide into it anyway. LOL Trunk, that's one idea for sure.
