Moving on...

With a day at the races behind us and a 2nd place to the new Briggs by very little... Not to mention it was a rain race.... yup, it rained all 13 hours we were there.

A few pics of my kid just doing her thing...

Then when I arrive home, I do my usual and sit down.

... and what should pop up on the local classifieds? Someone's old kart for sale and it's got something I want.

The briggs 5HP with the Updraft carb, running.

that Briggs with updraft carb is -IIRC- the missing second engine for the baroness.
And you know how it goes : Ladies first!

I'm a busy busy man my friend. We'll get there. It'll be mid summer or fall time when I get to it. I'm still collecting stuff for it.

that's right... and that's right. Ladies first. I'll be back later, leaving to pick up that engine and it's an hour drive. (it's attached to a kart btw... More parts)

Update:

What a sunday. Weather cleared up a bit and the racing stuff all put away has me on the road to pick up this crappy cart some guy is selling for his "bro" that's in jail.

Yea, just what I want to do... fund his release.

Whatever, on we go.

Returning home I promptly tore the motor off and cleaned it up. I removed all the stuff I wouldn't need and sat it next to the other one.

While a different year, they'll match up nicely. The recoil is different and is broken inside but that won't stop this project. I'm sure I'll fine another or at least matching ones sometime. It's the updraft carbs & shroud I wanted.

So, with the motors aquainted I pull out all the stored parts & pieces for the Baroness.

Finally, mock up time (and not in my living room)

And boy is she gonna be a bada$$.

The rear end on this has so much going on it will take a little bit to get it all right but it should work out well.

As for the chains, it's gonna be a close one.

I haven't placed the fin yet or a steering wheel because I'm still thinking about it.

There's a long way to go on this one but a ton of progress today.

Now that I see the two on the Baroness,
I wonder if it's possible to turn the starter facing the front..
and then add a big lever to the passenger side
to kick start both engines sitting inside the kart.

And the chainguard (if any) should be as much transparent as possible, it'd be a shame to visually cover the business end of the twins

Oh, if you still don't have a dual sprocket clutch, maybe you can ask for just the sprocket?

Update:

Just a mockup on the computer. Did it at lunch today.

it shows the placement of the tailfin and the machine gun... and some lettering.

more soon. Gotta weld up the frame.

How are you planning driving the rear sprocket with this dual set up? Just curious.

The rear engine has a clutch with 2 gears. (not shown)

Front engine and rear engine connect using one chain. It goes from the front normal clutch to the rear clutch inner gear. Then the outer gear on dual sprocket clutch to axle (2nd chain)

This way, either engine can die and it'll still run... which I expect.

The previous pics were just to line up where the chain would be...and if it'd all fit together.

Onward: Payday and time to buy a few things. (see, I told ya new parts happen)

Seeing that the baroness set up is different, gearing will be interesting.

The 2nd engine will have the dual geared clutch and all I can seem to find is a 12T version of this from Max-Torque.

This means that to have any speed close to the others, it will have to have a quite the small gear on the back. So, using a go kart galaxy mini hub with a 37 Tooth gear on the back, we should accomplish some speed.

I need anyone's help that is willing.

1. What other clutches out there have dual gears?

2. Does anyone have a usable one they'd sell me?

3. What's the most teeth available on one? This is a 3/4 shaft application, #35 chain.

I don't want to go the jackshaft route adding more complexity to this mess.

Update:

I contacted Jim Donovan @ maxtorque and received the following information... resulting in a change in plans.

Here's what he said:

"The only dual sprocket clutch we make is the 12 tooth #35 chain of which you must run old farm chain because the gap between the teeth on the two sprockets is not wide enough to handle the “space chain”. These clutches are already made and they have a special bushing and a special sleeve. It would be tough to machine down the hardened sprocket because of the interruptive cut which would be hard on inserts. I am not saying it would be impossible but it certainly would be time consuming.

Have you put a chain around your front sprocket and taken it back to the axle to see how close it comes to the second engine? I would outboard mount the front clutch and inboard mount the rear one. Since you are in the design stage you certainly can stagger the engines and run the dual sprocket on the axle. You can cut .300 off the hub so it almost runs flush to the crankcase cover. You would use an internal key in that hub since you are shorting it and taking off the set screws portion of the hub. "

So, looks like we're gonna go inboard on one, outboard on the other and go two sprockets in the back... and I think there's enough room based on the pic below.
