Update:

Kind of thinking what to do on this fine weekend about to hit so after dinner I'm outside having a beer & just lookin at all this extra stuff.

Sitting in the back yard is the frame that started all of this, Urban Defiance. To those not paying attention, she was the first one I did and I tore it apart last year. Why? Because I felt like it. It's handling wasn't all that super and I was onto other things.

It served it's purpose.

So, to revive an old idea (test bed and Semi, all in one) how's about we do some chopping & mods on that old frame... put the semi on it and see where it goes?

I have a spare set of Manco 4"s and some 5's... and the old predator I used once... and like 4 different axles & misc hardware... and the frame is still basically functional.

Which means the semi... has to be a different color. I have a flat black thing called U51.

We'll see.

Most of the plan tomorrow is just misc crap and see if I can get the train's tube to fit on right, maybe start on the cab.

Never know.

That's funny. The picture was taken with one of those 110 cameras, well before any of the nifty gadgetry we have now. I made it black & white for the fun of it.

I still look like that though, here's me 6 months ago.

Yes yes, all is well in general.

I was leaning towards a rusty primer for it, make it the rusty old tow truck sort of thing. Spare tires rack on it, etc. Maybe recreate a tow hook, misc rusty tools, road warrior type of thing... but shiny running parts. And the test bed for crap, like wheels I fix, etc.

Eh, we'll see.

Update:

Early morning has me in the shed of witchery looking for a lost gas tank. It's amazing how long black widows live if undisturbed.

One lost pair of glasses later and it's out to do a little bit on U51. I didn't find the tank... but I found the original old school chrome air cleaner I'd once used and some of the motor treatments (motor bling if you will) and went to work.

I replaced the pedal, the sprocket carrier and put on the disc for the disc brake I had hanging around. It should allow for the brake rod to go right between the rear stabilizers and the fin, right to the pedal.

Check out the little attachments on the back, top of the struts! Old pedals make great additions to it, kind of like a clunky old car might have ladder bars or something.

Fins are initially mounted too. Little inside wood blocks bolted to the perches, then a few small screws from side to side should take care of that. (not done)

We're keeping this one kind of normal for now engine wise, I'm sure it'll change down the road though.

I Love the way it sits though. Lots of little things to go, but it's coming together.

It's Old No. 34, (a.k.a. Loco)

It's deceiving when it comes to pictures sometimes... and while that tube seems high, it works very VERY well for me.

The container I found is very old and very thin, an inside frame is gonna be needed here. When I cut the bottom off, it was like a hot knife going through butter. Water in the bottom over the years made it very weak. But, the dents and just the whole thing works.

A soup can (lunch earlier) became the front light, stack & side tubes are just pvc for now.

Not much else to report, but this... will work nicely.

Oh, yes. The original wood handle on that old rusty thing I found for it... will come in handy too.

At about 7 feet long, she's quite the beast.

Goofing off today has yielded a few things.

Up first, I found some doo-hickey that seemed to fit the side of WachtMeister so we put that on for looks. Gives me a place to put other stuff too. It's rounded and kind of goes with the rounded theme.

Next, I found my old Chrome rims. These had been seen on various projects but seeing U-51 is a clunky heavy beast of a classic car, chrome rims somewhere were in order.

Then, it was sorting time. With 5 rides and all their rolling gear now in place, I had to see what I had left.

Happy day. One axle setup complete with wheels for the TonkaRT and one complete setup Bonneville.

Almost forgot, this one's for you Chancer. Remember that copper treatment you'd mentioned on some beastly thing of a hot rod?

In SLC is the Autorama this weekend.... guess who was there? I saw this thing in person suckah!

It's quite the work of art, I appreciated looking at it. Someone knew what they were doing and had pretty good artistic talent going on.

It is amazing how they make it look like they built the car in an hour on TV. And as you can see they actually do have talent.

Crazy talent behind this one. It probably took years to do this.

It was strange. I walked by it and had to do the "double take" for a sec. I'm like "holy crap, Chancer won't believe this." So I had to hunt my daughter down to have her take a pic. I never take my phone or cameras with me to these shows.

I was disappointed in the show overall though, what some people call hot rods really aren't hot rods. Cool stuff nonetheless.


I got a few ideas from the back end of it, there's fricken gears welded into the fixtures of the tail lights. The copper treatment really does have this weird dull but shiny, almost unreal look to it.

The engine is a work of art.

Fun fun!

I think I'm gonna take my rides next year & enter them in the show.

Those engines that guy uses are cool. Turbo charged Diesel engines on a Hot Rod.
and all the Purests with their typical Red 32 ford coupes with small block chevy's. Hate him.

I am not gullable to believe everything on TV but supposedly they built that car in less than a month.

You should take your rides next year.
We have a local wednesday night car show all summer, and i have thought about taking my Karts.
They are nothing real showy, just something different for the car guys to see.

Update:

After a crap day at work, I had to do something.

Big thanks to my wife for just listening to me sometimes. I'm not "that" guy when it comes to understanding the politics of certain things in the workplace.

I'm lucky to have her.

Anyhoo, after a small venting I got onto some of the "bitter work" on these rides.

Up tonight, just some painting. The TonkaRT needs wheels and if I do this one, it's gonna have a kick butt set. 6" manco's in the back, 5" in the front with my nifty wheel adaptor. Pic below was with the 4" fronts & 5" rears. These, will look way better.

I do have all the parts for it but the front end, well... just a Tonka truck front end will not do. It's just too small. I may have to make some addition.

So, wheels. Rustoleum, sun burst yellow. (keep in mind, this particular color takes like 3 days to dry)

Update: no insects. One day in the furnace room and they're where I can assemble it.

So, Painted with some usable wheels. Little black touch ups to be like Tonka wheels as much as we can... (yea, Tonka wheels had 5 spokes, but this'll work.)

Wheels ready, axle ready.

I know what frame to use and we'll get on that in a few days.

I think I have a possible frame for this, it'll emerge soon enough.

For the tutorial, I figured I'd just wing it some weekend and make a 2 day project by finding some cheap deal and see where it leads me, and document the steps in short order.
