Just a brief thought before fall & winter hits: I think... I'm going to make something for this I've never attempted.

Front Ice skates... and rear ice rims/tires. Roads around here just get iced over and are pretty smooth in the winter... hm.... Thrift stores, used ice skates and some ingenuity...

Wonder what'll happen.

Anyone ever seen it done? Help me out here!

I've never seen it done, but I know it can be done, because it was done back in the 1920's around here, but for use on the local small lake's, not the road. Apparently the Great Depression ended such thing's due to no money, and the local lake's belonged to just the fishermen and ice skaters until the invention of the snowmobile......

Could you just run a bunch of sheet metal screws through the tire tread for traction?
Then maybe caulk the inside screw heads and run inner tubes?

If you lived in snow country (or at least paid attention if you do), you'ed know to never install the screw's in the actual tire carcass; you install them in the tread blocks of the tire, using screw's short enough to never compromise the actual carcass...... (Really, what are they teaching these kids these day's......)......

Sucks for those in CA, I really feel for ya.

That's SNOW! We have it for 4 MONTHS in these parts... and seeing as such, Sarge is gonna get some gear to drive in it. This outta be fun eh?

Moving on, Update:

In thinking about wheels for the hard SNOW/ICE roads around here, a trip to the thrift stores is in order this weekend for a cheap pair of ice skates... But in the meantime, what about rear tires... hm...

In my pile of stuff, I found one wheel I think I'll use, but will be needing one more. It's a modern job and I think they make hubs for the 1" axles I use and they're split rims... helpful for all kinds of reasons when making a studded special tire...

...one that looks good on ole sarge here that is.

So, a question or two.

a. Does anyone happen to have another of these hanging around that they'd be willing to part with? They're 6" rims.
b. Does anyone have any 1" keyed hubs I might buy that fit said wheel. 2-13/16" Circle for the bolt pattern.

Reason: I'd rather have used stuff. New just doesn't work for crazy ideas. After looking around, they can be had at BMI karts for very little if I really want to buy one wheel and two hubs... and they are cheap suckers. (rather have one bend than bust up my baby that's for sure.)

I just came back from a trip through Northern California and man it is indeed dry there! Kelly, how about using some snow blower tires for the rear of Sarge and screwing some short 1/4 hex headed screws in the lugs for grip, have you ever seen tires by the name of Snow Hogs? I used to buy short hex headed sheet metal screws and I would screw them into my dirt bike tires lugs and ride my bikes on packed snow in the winter time, it worked pretty good! Just a thought.

Update: Thanks to a new guy here locally, ole Sarge now has the Manco 6" wheels I've been searching for. Even though they're fronts (Manco didn't make 6" live axle rears) these will be adapted to work as rear wheels.

A HUGE thanks to Daron for helping me out. I'll visit next week & we'll check out his ride in Person. It's just 30 min away from here.

A weekend coming up and I really have nothing planned except one thing...

Make these. The SNOW/ICE front end attachments.

Time for a trip to the thrift store for some beat up ice skates and a few beefy door hinges... and maybe a look around for a non functional snow blower with usable snow tires.

not sure the hinge is a good idea...
since skates are narrow and tall, that looks like it want's to fold the first chance it gets..

personally I'd use two skates per spindle (spaced maybe 2-3 inches) to lessen the chance it could.

We'll see... total height from axle to the ground is only 4 or 5 inches. With 2 beefy turnbuckles on a big hinge, I can adjust the camber.... but you are probably right. It might be a bit much.

The first rendition will just be the skates attached to a hub and a shock or springs to keep it from folding backwards and spinning around in a circle.

It's a good use of hubs and crappy bearings that aren't quite straight too.

How about tank treads for the rear axle...;
a second "rear axle" and some cheating with caster wheels should make a nice tank tread.

LOL! And all this is extreme. For now, it'll just be some simple front end skates and rear snow blower wheels with some killer screws in them to start & see just how ole Sarge here does on a frozen lake.

Yes, a frozen lake. There's tons of em around these parts in the winter. Nice & flat, good for a starting point to see if there's any fun to be had in it... other than being cold that is.
