This is my official entry for this years build off. No,this is not gonna be the "all out" kart I've been designing. This is just a build , to get one on the scene and get the chatter started.... LoL I'll go into more details, shortly, for now ,here is my starting pile of goods. Not much , as this was a last minute entry, but I'm sure I'll manage a running tire burner by 12-31-2014 @ 11:59pm.....

Couple more pics, most of you have already seen.....
I know what wheels and tires I'm going to use for the back. I'm still trying to decide if I want a 14" m/c wheel /tire in front @18" height or go for a 10-12" wheel and somewhere around 14-16" height?..... The back wheels will be Honda atc 70 wheels with adapters I made to go on a 1" live axle. They will have 18" tires, around 6-8" wide..... Yes, going for the fat and skinny look. Only problem I'm finding for this build, is the m /c wheels I want to use all ride on a 1/2" (really metric, but you know what I mean..... :lolgoku:) axle. I'm not liking a 3" long 1/2" spindle holding me up at 50-60mph..... Although these are chinese clone bikes I'm looking at, I imagine the name brand front axles are the same diameter, since they are the originals to the clones..... (did you follow that?)
At any rate, I'm on the hunt for 2 dirt bike (or scooter) front wheels (10"-14") that I can put bearings for a 3/4" axle.... (anyone??). I like the idea of spoke wheels, but I'll use what I can get in a pinch.....
More to come..... Buying 80% of the steel, next week. (when I can con my wife into going to pick up my order....) Hoping to have the basic frame mocked up and tac welded into place, by the end of the month. I have a 2 seat yerfdog I am supposed to refurbish in the next 2 weeks, but if I don't hear from them soon, I'm gonna push it to the back burner. I gave them a time line.... My work space is only a 2 car garage..... Ok I only have half of it left..... Too many toys (not enough if you ask me..... :stir:)

I kinda got sick of looking at the body hanging from my garage roof. I've been working on everyone else's stuff, and neglecting me.....:lolgoku:
I've spent the last 3hours searching parts and prices. I found some 10" steelies 3" wide!!! :wai: high speed hubs and a 1" axle stub! I feel better having the high speed hubs and a 1" spindle over the cheaper m /c. Wheels with 1/2" spindles....
10"x8" steelies in the back with 205/50-10 DOT tires. The fronts will be DOT scooter tires, about 16" tall.... now I need baby moon caps......
I'm already at $200 for just the front wheels, tires, hubs,ect.... Gonna make my own spindles and brackets. Need/want heavy duty overkill type..... :lolgoku: Back tires, wheels, and hubs are gonna be about $200.... I better start being extra nice to my wife...... :roflol::roflol:

I don't think I can buy the wheels and tires till late October.... Well, I have to buy the front wheels and the 1" stub axles very soon.... Kinda need them to put the front end on paper, so I know what I'm doing (yeah right.....) before I waste some steel or worse....
I'll probably pass on the swap meet now. I need all the scratch ($$$) I can scratch together..... This kart might not be the "all out" version, but I'd still like to put a 'lil sumptin sumptin into it....
We shall see though.... I'll know better in the next few weeks.

OK we'll since I'm a few months behind on building,I got to lay off the forum a little and catch up. Today, much to my wife's dismay, I bought some steel to start on the main frame. I brought home the trusty chop saw,got new welding wire, and other secret stuff. I'm not using the frame design I have for the real version of these. I'm keeping that under wraps for now. Instead,I'm trying a few things to make "kiddie" hi po minis. After measurements were taken last night,a new frame design came to be . swing arm rear suspension with 15x8 tires (I like em wide... ) 200 cc 5 speed, with a skunk works black box that will be doing my shifting for me. (Yes,push button shift ,on the diy guy budget...) The front will be a solid beam axle with 1" spindles. 10x3 wheels with 18" x3.5" tires. Faux radius rods, time permitting. Rear shocks are vw coil overs.... More to come ,soon ....

. Quick question...... I want to limit the amount of travel in the rear. I'm only looking for about 3.5-4.5 " of travel. I'm wanting to try a short swing arm, about 18" total length, but only 11-12" from pivot to center of the axle. The swing arm will be 20" wide, and connected to the frame using 5/8" heim ends. Got to rethink the shocks because this engine is 14"+ wide. This is gonna be a tighter fit than I thought. So,any ideas, theorys' or advise?

Well, lost a whole day to a uti. Hopefully I'll be a little better today. I'm tired of looking at this body, and now some steel too, and not seeing any progress. I keep wanting to switch back to the chassis I designed, but it won't work on this application. (that will make sense when the "big" ones are ready for the general public..... LoL )
I was hoping to get a quick answer to my last post, but guess not.... I'm going ahead with the swingarm but switching to coil overs off my 90cc 4 wheeler,as they are less sprung weight and I should get some droop when I sit in the kart.... I only see one huge thing I don't like about it (the kart) ...... Has too much ground clearance. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's just cause I'm looking at things upside down... (kinda feel like Tihm, but past slanted a little... LoL ) I'm looking at 9" of distance between bottom of kart and the ground. Maybe more, depending on whether I go straight axle, or put a little riser, like the OE front axle. That would drop the front a little bit. The back has to have some suspension because I fear hitting a dip or hole at 50+mph without it. It would be a rough ride, and that's just no good. I'm switching to the atv shocks because the spring weight is only half that of the vw's. The vw has 800lb springs (progressive) each. It takes all I got to get the spring to start compressing. I can get about an inch out of 8" stroke. That's just one.... The atv on the other hand, has nice springy action. If I jump on the front bumper, it will drop and then come back up almost all the way, with both.... I think that is going to fit my needs just right.
On the front, I was wanting to use tall spindle brackets loaded with high rate springs, like on a Murray Explorer or American Express. If I go that route, I would be making my own spindles out of 4145 bar stock at work. Then weld on the 1" axles to accept the high speed bearings and hubs with 4 on 4. I'm not so sure if that really has any suspension effect. I know it's barely noticeable on the smaller karts, so I'm wondering if it's worth it to try here..... ? Probably just as well make it easier and go solid front end....
:ack2: you know, after starting this, I see potential flaws in my design for the big boy version. Even with a completely different chassis, I foresee suspension issues. I might have to scrap the irs idea..... :censored:
Waiting for the sun to come out and play. I'm gonna start cutting up the frame about 8:30..... :stir: Hope the neighbors are awake, or at least slept good, cause that's fixing to come to a halt...... :stir::roflol:
Gonna post pics of my progress tonight. I cleared out space yesterday so I had decent room to work. But then I took in a lawn mower and a dirt bike. No more work space. I'll just push a few outside..... :lolgoku:

Sorry Jim, must have missed that :(

but to be honest, I see it was a question, but I do not see what you're asking ...
You can limit the amount of travel on about any swingarm setup either by limiting the travel of the shocks (there are rubber grommets for that exact task to slip over the -whatsitcalled-rod)
or you build a 'bumper' of some sort that stops the swingarm at acertain position (have rubber to dampen the 'clank' ;))
But a quick drawing of your swingarm in mind would help me understand the question a little better :D

Got a little done today. I need a welding table. "Flat" concrete isn't flat enough.
