Nope, no welding involved; it was all done on the lathe...
The nut IS removable... you guys just need to figure out how...
well then, no weld.. still the right "lump" is internally threaded
and put in place after the nut was threaded on.

A step down in the thread size. Internal threads on one side and external on the other. I'm still betting it's 3 total pieces.
