Hi guys. man its been a long time since ive been back here.lol

haha Dont hardly recognize anyone except the long stays.

But as for the reason im back. Got a car question! :auto:

So ive been driving my 1995 Ford Taurus and about two weeks ago the trans pan gasket shot and i ran it low on trans fluid :ack2: . well you guess what happened next with a taurus. Trans went out. its a AX4N.

I was driving it to school one day and it acted up. on cold mornings its known to jump out of gear. So you just stop shift it to park and back to drive and it goes on no problem.

Well that morning it did it several times. but i simply thought it was the pesky shift solenoid acting up. so i drove it on there.and In shop i found it was leaking. and lost alot of its pull.

So i call my dad tell him the issue and he brings some fluid and we fill it up and it drive home almost no prop at all. pulled fine.

once home we inspected it. found the leak and got a filter kit and fluid. Replaced the pan gasket the filter and new fluid plus lucas.

Now heres the weird part. after doing this its more or less lost 1st gear and almost lost reverse,(but it did fine comming home) but if you baby it in first itll pick up and pull fine through the other gears.

Im wondering why its doing that? another odd thing was there was no metal at all in the fluid, but tons of bubbles. still is.

any ideas?

Had a Honda do that to me once... (only did it after warmed up though).... Did you make sure you used the proper transmission fluid?

not sure.... but I 'think' theres an internal filter that may need to be replaced as well(if not already done).

well apparently the first and reverse are their own clutch pack. so im thinking maybe that burned out, but it pulled alright in first when i brought it home. and still did until we put the kit into it. but we've run to fluid changes through it. with no luck

Yeah, it sounds to me like you've done 1st/reverse. As you said, they work off the same clutch... well, it's the only clutch pack, the other gears use bands & hydraulic servo's.

The first hint that it was going was the jumping out of gear; it wasn't jumping out, there simply wasn't enough meat on the clutch plates to bind properly; the final nail in the coffin was running it dry...

The choices now are take it apart & rebuild it or find a used unit & swap them...

Im pretty sure before it was the fact it wasnt building hydrolic pressure well. and when i parked and put it back in drive it did, but the leak was my fault likely. i bottomed it kinda hard which broke the gasket letting it leak.

I think it stripped the splines because if i lightly apply the throttle and give it a sec it will pick up and pull it first. but if you just gas it it slips until second.

AFAIK all that would do is limit the trans to 1st and 2nd instead of forcing it into 2nd.

:wai: Most trannys with a 2nd gear selection will not shift to any other gear unless the selector is moved. By starting in 2nd amd moving the selector at around 10 mph it should down shift back to 1st gear and then automatically shift up thru the range.

The clutch pack crystalized and will no longer grab. They are burnt up. It's not from changing the fluid, but the heat they saw from running low on fluid. They won't get better, just worse the more you try it..... It will grab with little to no throttle, cause that's how much grip it is left with. Just like a manual, once worn down, the clutch will not grab, or just slip, when throttle is applied.....

Thats exactly how it feels in first and reverse. but why would the other gears still pull?

Ohh my bad. I missed that. So what exactly would need replaced? (funny how i want to fix a old taurus of all things isnt it?) Because if the parts not so expensive i may try to give it shot myself and try to learn alittle on it.

Okay. found something interesting. I was checking the harness to the tranmission and i un plugged it. and just like that i got drive back. Its got good pull no slip but acts as if its starting out in 2nd? and not shifting up. (i expected this do to the solenoids being unplugged) and when i hook it back up i get the same orginal issues back.

So i guess my question is. what is happening when i un-plug the harness? why did i get pull back?

Probably because it is in second. My bet is that when it loses signal from the computer it defaults to 2nd because its shallow enough to start out in but steep enough to drive around in without screaming the engine to redline.
