Fun?
What planet do YOU live on?!
That thing is freaking UGLY and OVERBUILT.
It's easy to find much better stuff on CL. (i.e my kart was only $60)
Don't be hating so hard on it. I think being overbuilt is better than under, it could always be a ugly duckling. You should have soon MY kart before I finished it up. The welds look like popcorn.
How is your kart doing anyway? Ride it lately?
Uhmmm no, in fact.
Just today I found out that 3 parts are missing in the carburetor, making it leak harder than than WikiLeaks.
But I have had it running, leaking oil and gas at the same time, but I need to save up some money to get the 3rd carb part. I already ordered the other 2.
Aaaaaand I still need to fix the chain alignment.
Otherwise, yeah, it's driveable.
But:
I try to look past the negative and see the positive.

.....and????Nooo nononono..
WE DO NOT CHEER WHEN SOMEONE IS ABOUT TO GET HURT!!
That kart is a perfectly good example of a terrible idea.
If any subsection of that kart is an example for the mind put at any other section of the kart;
then the only safe thing about the kart is that it's currently not moving.
Yes it's free, yes it might look tempting to get running..
but the bad news is: it's no learners edition kart at all..
to even detect all the weaknesses and fix them takes well trained minds and hands.
One overlooked issue as bad as the back rest or the wheels
and attached to a 8 horse enigne could cause a weeklong vacation in your local hospital.
SO especially since we talk young guys, learning ... that kart should be avoided.
I mean sure.. Kelly took worse and made it into something fun..
and sure some people around I wouldn't say a word them trying to fix that.
But in the hands of a yet untrained kid...
NO!
Whoever made that contraption seriously had obviously no fricking idea what he's doing;
So chances are all but slim that someone's going to get hurt with/on or by that kart.
"WE" do not want any of that happening!
Sure DIY is about helping each other, about sharing knowledge, infos and expertise whenever possible.
But DIYGK wants karters to be unharmed happy riders first.
And in this particular combination (young karter starting with the hobby.. that contraption)
the only safe way is suggesting to walk away!
Frankly: in order to fix that piece of metal
whoever gets their hands on it will need an angle grinder, a welder and a decent set of tools,
he would need to spend a hundred bucks for wheels alone not to crash it in five minutes.
And he'd need to buy a seat of sorts (30-40 ish bucks)
AAnd most of all he should very well be knowing what he's doing.
but let's stick with the money ...
So 100 bucks for wheels, 40 for a seat are the bare minimum to spend.
(plus shipping if bad comes to worse)
for 140 you can find a nice roller on CL I'm sure.. a professionally made chassis that's safe to use.
Since as I said: the briggs is certainly a good thing to get ..especially so if free;
and a set of brakes are certainly nice as well...
but the chassis would never see an inch of road IIWM

Wes I totally agree with you! Not everyone has tons of money, and that can be made to go with little money. I also agree that that seat needs to go. But yea I would drive it like I stole it even at 52 years old.Kids these days need to learn how to scrounge and repair stuff not just buy new, I had to when I was a kid.

Well, sorry to tell you this, but very few of us have a Hobart 210 MVP.
I don't even have a HF 90A.
And sometimes, there really is a line when something is junk.
...
I'm an aircraft mechanic...
..To me it's a challenge and it would be fun...
..If the kid was nearby I would take that thing and help him make it right for free...
