These type of bearings are typically equipped with an eccentric locking collar... tap with a centerpunch to remove....

Use a torch to heat the bearing, polish the shaft on either side itll slide off....

:mad2: Confirmed drive shaft is now off. Now to break out the torch and work on cleaning it up.

The frame just needs a little bit more rust removal and then welding and to prime and paint!

Spindles and hubs showed up today. Tires should be here in a few days.

I feel like it is making progress but still a ways to go!

Received the tires. Did a little mockup. I am happy with the size.

I wasn't happy that one of the rims had a different offset. I guess I will have to buy a new rim from BMI. But for now I will use a larger spacer.

I fixed this weld but forgot the after picture. I guess I will upload that tomorrow.

I started working on the rear axle removing rust. You can see the briggs int he background that I am working on still. Honestly i am thinking the $99 predator might be an easier solution because of mounting issues, at least until I can get something better. My son is chomping at the bit to get it going. I am seriously contemplating just cutting off the old bearings and replacing them, I just hate to waste stuff.

Side note, I was at harbor freight and looking at the powder coat kit for $69 but I don't have an oven big enough to cook the frame in. I was thinking I could make one some aluminum siding, insulation foam board, plywood, and my shop kerosene heater. Not sure I want to do that though. I have the frame about ready for primer and paint. Just trying to decide what to do with it.

Yeah I think the old bearings are getting cut off tonight and I will order new. That is such a simple part to have go bad and screw up the whole build.

Either way.... still polish the shaft up nice... itll make it real easier to put the new bearings on, as there wont be anything to prevent it sliding on....

Trying to find bearings, need 4. I think this is close....I was trying to figure out what the speed rating should be on these and where to buy. I think this might be the one... but some of my measurements don't match. Wonder if its the rust or I need a different one.

If it were me... Polish the shaft... Take off the bearings and such... Measure the inner race ID/find the bearing number on the outer race and get that..

Did you rock the caliper to get the measurement?...

I have been cutting off the bearings but I am not sure how to get the keys out. Read a bunch of google pages so I have some things to try.

Use a punch or a chisel. Nick the end of the key upwards until a section lifts... use a small screwdriver to see if itll lift out then....

Great build, its coming along nicely.

Just be careful with those wide tires, especially if you son is going to be riding. The older karts were meant to have the skinny tires which allow the kart to slide. Those wider tires are meant for the newer style race karts which have more flex than the older karts. Wide tires on a vintage kart can get you up on 2 wheels and flip you.

Here are a couple of old pictures, I have a new steering wheel. The front arm welded, still needs a little cleanup. About ready for sealer, primer and paint. Bearings all came off the shaft. Started cleaning and getting ready for reassembly. I have almost everything purchased now except the linkage for gas and brakes, still trying to figure that out....

Great advice.
Have your son work up to speed with those tires.
As was said, the old Karts were designed to slide on hard skinny tires.
In a hard corner the inside front tire would lift
On a modern kart the inside rear comes up.
Too much grip on a older kart can pitch over easily.

Looks like a Rupp Grand Prix with axle braces and rear bumper added for racing by an owner.
If I remember right, '62 is the only year the GP had a wide steering hoop and one piece frame.
The '63 had a two piece frame.
