can i shorten the spring a few coils, or buy one for higher RPM?
If your spring has been over heated, it will have lost its temper and shortening probably wont help.
Some clutch manufacturers sell stock replacement (and higher rpm engagement) springs, and some dont sell any replacement parts at all. What brand/model clutch do you have?
But if you cant buy a new spring from your clutches manufacturer, you'll find most good hardware stores sell a wide variety of springs for just a buck or 2 each.
You might find they have a long spring that that would either fit right on and work as-is, or one you could possibly cut and bend new ends to fit and be just like your original.
I'd try to find a new spring the same length and size as your original, although it still might take some experimenting with others to get the engagement rpm you want.
