Well I have a 60 tooth one but that Isn't gone increase my speed actually It will slow it down, according to the Speed calculator. Diameter in Inches (10") Engine
RPM (3600) Teeth
on Axle 60 Teeth
on Clutch 17T, SPEED 30MPH.

I'm surprised that your ratio being so low doesn't get you up to your speed. Is your accel. %#!+? If you want more speed and accel. pick up a 600ish cc bike engine. I once found a Yamaha 750cc late 80's bike motor for $100 but mom shot down the idea as a kart powerplant. The bike pulled 127MPH so my kart would've hauled if geared properly. Too bad I had to pass.

I would definitely suggest some type of dirt bike engine. My yz250 2-stroke gets up to 60 and could easily do 80 just gets a lil nerve racking doing 60 in a kart.

well swap that tiny briggs twin for somthing bigger like a 250cc bike engine
(personly id say the v8 is still the best option)

That brigs has more cc's then a 250 cc bike motor.. only thing the bike motor got on the briggs is a gear box

Slideways: there is really no reason you should be a **** to this person... he asked a simple question no need to be a a$$f*cuk about it

ahh good point i was being sarcastic cause that briggs would have alot of power but a 250cc would be cool
also be expected to spend to go faster it is murfys law that u never have the correct peice
but how is your current accelaration cause if it currently puts your eyes in the back of your head then the ratio can be dropped without haveing terrible get up and go

But when you do the calcs, it's says you should be doing 50-ish, right?

If that's the case, my money's on you being geared too high. You're, what- 14T and 27T, yes? change out that rear sprocket for something larger. It will lower your ratio and give the engine more mechanical advantage. The speed calculator is only theoretical, insofar as the engine only has so much power, and if the ratio is too low, you will never reach the top speed. Ie, your max RPM may be 3600, but at full bore, full load, the engine's only able to turn, say, 3000.

I actually gained top speed by gearing down because I had that problem. By doing so, I took some load off the engine and it's now able to spin up easier to max RPM.

Thats just a theoretical speed there are different things that will slow you down.. wind resistance, Friction from bearings, friction from all 4 tires on the road.. and those are some wide tires and probaly a sticky compound also friction from the chain and what not

Yeah weight.. also rotational weight of axle and what not lol im getting a little to specific here But 40 sounds pretty good on a kart that low it seems alot faster!

Alright, thanks. So this is what i will do, I will thrown in that 60T sprocket that I have laying around and we will see what that does run a test with the gps on it and Ill report back.

Why do you need to go 80 on a go kart. Thats what a car is for. A go kart is just something to put around on and have fun. Since your *** is 5cm off the ground, when your doing 50km/h (30mph) you feel like your doing 80mph anyway. Do 60mph on a go kart then say you want to do 80mph. I bet u will be ****ting yourself. Just think, if that tyre comes off, or a bolt comes loose, or ur brakes fail, or your engine throttle sticks or anything, your dead as a door knob. Seriously! Keep the fast stuff for a real car.

There has been a guy who did 80 on a racing mower on the salt flats... racing mower much higher cg and all home made and following the rules of the b/p class... anyway hows 80+ differnt on a kart then on a bike?

There are only a couple of clutches that can hold up to a modded Vanguard. Take a pic of the clutch an i may be able to ID it.

Turns out im not such a **** after all. Just sick of rich kids that think the internet is an excuse for learning for themselves.

As already discussed in another thread "cc vs. HP", cc has (almost) no relation to power. A 250cc dirt bike engine WILL make more power than your engine.

I personally think 80 is just suicidal, I don't like doing 80 in my kart and it has a full cage. Why the obsession with top speed? That type of kart excels at handling more than anything else. If you want to do 80, get in your car.

BUT, if you really have your heart set on 80 then I think a bike engine is your only option.

Turns out im not such a c**t after all.

May I humbly request you mind your language? There's young kids that cruise this forum, and they don't need any help. I'm a contractor who just spent his day cursing a blue streak, but I get home to the kids and shut it off. Thank you.

The internet can be an incredibly valuable learning tool, no?

MZT, you'll probably find that 60T gives you much better takeoffs, but you may lose a little top speed. Try it out, and then base your next move on it.
