i bought this go kart from a friend and he had a 6.5 hp engine on it but did some not so kosher things to his clutches (like weld it to its self so that it can be an automatic). so now i'm looking to buy another clutch chain, but i dont know where to start. will any clutch bolt up to the motor or are they brand specific?

Why weld the clutch to its self? that just defeats the object of a clutch!!!

"are clutches brand specific"
no, but they do have to have the right size bore (centre). most engines have a 3/4 inch diameter shaft, apart from a few. measure the shaft and buy a clutch to fit. as long as the bore is the right size it should work. if the engine is a honda or looks like a honda (honda clone) then a 3/4 inch clutch should fit (make sure it is 3/4 inch not 20mm tho, as some clones are 20mm. the 0.95mm difference does affect what clutch)

also the chain size will matter. most chains are #35, #40, #41 or #219. ask your friend, and he should know what size it is.

hope this helps

Most clutches are 3/4" bore, so I'd say you're right. However 3/4" and 20mm are only 0.95mm different so with a tape measure it would be easy to make a mistake.

i think engines from hf are 3/4 not 20mm, but i would check. my clone is 20mm, and it was quite easy to tell with a pair of my grandads old calipers it wasnt 3/4", by setting them to 3/4" and they wouldnt fit over the shaft.

yeah its 3/4 but my new question is- i called them and asked for the specs and they told me something about 3600 rpm is that where it red lines or is that where the power band ends?

same thing, thats the max rpm it will run stock. so you want a clutch that engages a decent amount before 3600 rpms.

3600 = max rpm of most honda gx and gx clones, and small 4 strokes
without mods/ removing govenor
1800-2000 rpm = standard clutch cuts in (i think)

Photography involves lots of swearing, and can be very expensive...I swear at my teacher because he says my pictures are crap and i spend lots of my valuable time doing dumb assignments for him...Mountain biking is fun though, but also can be expensive...

yeah those might be fun if i didnt like going fast! i can build a car with no problem, but these lil 6 1/2 engines confuse the hell out of me! and to top if off i dont have a lot of time with all the other side projects i have going, so my time and money have to be split between all of them
