After looking at this link http://minidoodle.com/id278.htm I really want to make one of these for my first project.. ( Yes I'm new ) Just wondering if anyone has any idea on how the track works? Has anyone ever built one of these? I'm about 250lbs so should I get a fairly big engine? Would I need a Torque Converter? How well would it work with suspension?

I have this old Honda 80cc, Would it be a good engine to put onto a minibike with a track like that? Or even a mini bike in general?

WOULD THIS BE A GOOD FIRST PROJECT?!
I live in Canada Lots of snow would be put to good use.

A 6.5hp with a tav should work decently. A 13hp with a tav would be better. :D I'm not sure what you would get the track off of, but that'd be a whole lotta fun!!!

Yes the track has me stumped. I'm just not sure what my first project should be seeing as I'm just getting into welding and all this stuff! I weight 250lbs so a off road go kart with a big old snowmobile engine would haul my carcass around. but that involves a lot more fabrication?

I have the piranha ll Plans and that looks like a nasty toy to play with but is it good for a first time builder?

Sled engines dont take much fab work, motor mount plate and a jackshaft along with a big enough frame to fit one.

As for the snowbike, i think that would be AWESOME! I think your 80cc honda would do it, assuming its a cr80 2 stroke. I would check for one of those tracks off a tracked snowblower? not sure how strong they would be but they would probably work out ok.

Personally, i would make both the Piranha II and the snowbike if i had the money. If you have a vehicle to mess around with right now, i'd go with the snowbike so you have it for this winter, then you can make a go kart in the winter. That way you build the toy that will be used in the opposite season.

The mini snow machine I just picked up uses a double chain with hard rubber slats bolted to it as the track, It doesn't look very durable for a heavy rider but If you used heavier chain and metal slats it might take the abuse I've also seen tires with the sidewalls cut out used for tracks.

why dont you just put a track and ski on the honda 80, and what would be so great about putting that motor on a mini bike frame?
