I'd like to add reverse any ideas how?

Let me tell you a little about my project. I'm in a wheelchair and i'm buildfing a go cart that I can roll on top of and drive. Essentially it's a go cart with an open square platform in the center i roll into from the side with a small built in metal ramp. I'm using an ebay powerMax 6.5 hp electric start motor. My concern is as soon as i get onto this thing i will have now way of getting out and reversing . I really need to put some kind of reverse on this thing. I'm open for any and all ideas! I have thought maybe put another cheapie small motor backwards on the other side of the axle. Isn't there a way to add one more gear somehow to change the rotation of the motor i have? I even considered using an electric motor. I have a bunch of powerchair motors. But the electric motors require 24 volts which is 2 2volt batteries and they are very heavy.



Any ideas!

You CAN put another engine on the other side of the kart...

Either that or a expensive transmission/gearbox...

2HP or so should suit you fine.

Hmmm you raise an interesting problem. It would be easy to do if you used gears because then one rotates the opposite direction.

Maybe use a weed eater engine with some serious gear reduction on the other side ? They already have a centrifugal clutch, so you could just let the weed eater motor idle while you ride and use it when you need to. They don't use much fuel at all just idling. All you really need to do is add some gear reduction and it should produce enough torque just to slowly reverse if you need to. Chainsaw motor would be even better.

You do not HAVE to use a TC,just mount a small sprocket with the same size bore on the gearbox.

Weedeater engines do not have a shaft... thus you cannot connect a clutch to it.

you know there is a b&s motor that has a second shaft output on it that is for reverse i think it runs of the cam not for sure but my brother-n-law is getting the motor this week off a guy has any one ever seen one before?they come on alot of rol-tilers

Some do, some don't. I have a weed eater engine that has one and I have a complete weed eater that doesn't. So it just depends on the model.

yeah ive seen the briggs with the second output. at first i though it was for the timing belt.
actually i got 2 of them outside the garage

More expensive weed eaters do. It makes starting easier, as it does not put a load on it when starting. Cheapo ones? Heh, nope.

Why not go with the electric idea but use 2 small 12v batteries? Like from a lawn mower or motor cycle?

spending $250 on a gearbox or having another entire gasoline engine on there just for reverse sounds crazy

You can usually pick up older beat up rider lawnmowers for cheap (sometimes free), add a v belt centrifugal clutch to the stock drivetrain and bolt it on a frame (use a much shorter belt and have the engine/trans side by side). Make sure this mower is a stick shift and not controlled with variable pulleys, a hydrostatic model would probably also work. Then you have multiple gearing setups for different conditions along with reverse.

But how would this help...
You can get an engines shaft the turn backwards just by mounthing the whole engine backwards (for reverse im saying)
Do these engines have two cranks or one just the one of the cam :huh:
