My roomate and i just set up a cart w/ a 5hp b&s....
and the clutch appeared a little loose on the drive shaft.
so after a few laps at the local dirt road i checked the drive shaft and it had been worn down perhaps as much as 1/8" and now has a nice clean taper to the last 2". did this compleatly trash the drive shaft and was there something missing....

Sounds like maybe a keway was not there, or the set screw was not there. Either wasy it appears the clutch "walked" on the crank. Post up a pic of the damage...

And btw, welcome to the site!

Well... the keyway and key were both present as well as the set screw, BUT the outer drum on the clutch seemed REALLY loose.
 and the clutch would engage just after pull starting it

Bushing requires lubrication at regular intervals. More often in dirty/dusty conditions. Excessive chain tension would also contribute to this as evidenced by statement "and the clutch would engage just after pull starting it.". Clutch was probably worn out to begin with.
